MoCo pools require unreasonable things to be hired as a lifeguard and I think they pay less, best to try a private pool.

What’s unreasonable?

They sure seem better quality than what comes out of places like Georgetown Aquatics.

So I'm on the west coast now, but this might help you anyways. My 15 y.o. DD is going to work at her school's bookstore this summer. School bookstores are often active during the summer because they have to order books/supplies/trinkets and unbox them, price them and lay them out, and also deal with customers who are in summer school.

The reason we went in that direction is because her summer is cut up (she is a camp counselor for a week in late June, then in a summer class for a week in early August, and we go visit her cousins for a week in July)

The school bookstore knows that high schoolers often have cut-up schedules and so slots them all in...my kid can work summer week 1,2, 4, 5, 7, 10, whereas I don't think a local business would be interested in hiring and training someone with no experience, just for three months, AND someone who is in/out like that.

Anyways see if your school's bookstore operates like that, and if not, maybe the library.

She made a cover letter and “resume” — obviously it is pretty short! — and has walked around in Old Town Alexandria and Del Ray dropping it off in retail stores, but so far, no bites. She is hoping for a retail job rather than babysitting-type work. Does anyone have any tips for how a girl her age can find work, other than continuing to pound the pavement?

Many summer camps are hiring CITs with pay at age 15 in the Alexandria City area.
She needs to branch out and start looking at the West End.
I think Baskin Robbins off of Quaker is also hiring for the summer so she could try there.
Babysitting is another option.

Apparently you didn't read the post where I said cashier - not all are lifeguards. And, they do have training if you swim well.

Also, Starbucks on King St. is hiring baristas. There are also 4 zillion lawyers in Old Town, she might be able to get a job answering phones, goffering, etc.

None of these sound like places that hire 16 year olds.

How about Chik fil a? They hire teenagers and she will be guaranteed Sundays off.

I just plugged in teen and Alexandria in Indeed.com and came up with cashier jobs at Staples, Target, Albertson's and a floor place. Receptionist at a nail salon, dog walker, AMC theatre and a florist. Good luck and she can do it!

When I was her age I waitressed at the Belle Haven Country Club. There are a lot of jobs there—restaurant staff, golf staff, pool staff, tennis staff...

Top PP here; good point; it does have a storefront with some pencils and school shirts etc, but I can see how many schools won't have this. The part I'm talking about is the back part--the part where the school gets the books for distribution.
Also, if your school doesn't have that, a local college will, and they might have flexible hours as they are also dealing with students.
