Worst flight turbulence you've experienced?

Anonymous
I've had 2....

1. Even the flight attendants were strapped in and looked nervous

2. Was mild turbulence and then the plane suddenly dropped. Guy had been up walking (despite attendants trying to get him back to his seat). Smacked his head on a seat and was knocked out. The plane quickly recovered from the drop, but we had to make an emergency landing for medical help for the guy. He was conscious but bleeding from a cut on his head. His significant other was yelling at him for ruining their trip

I have heard other horror stories about Denver turbulence. We’re flying ther for vacation this summer. I hate turbulence and am already concerned!

Denver and Vegas often have turbulence on final approach. Just remember: it is totally normal. For the pilots, it’s equivalent to driving in rush hour. Routine.

So we had turbulence returning from Orlando. My then 3yo DD who was wearing her Cinderella gown announced loudly- this is better than space mountain. She then proceeded to put her arms up and laugh through the turbulence.

I wanted to throw up because we kept dropping. But she would squeal with glee. Ever since when we fly and there is turbulence, she squeals “arms up”.

Yes, people stare.

Sounds like one of the regulars on the Relationships board.

Flight to Colorado Springs

The pilot came on to tell us that he'd been instructed to circle the runway for the past 30 minutes due to the wind shears, but we were running low on fuel so he had to land. He told us to brace for a rough landing. The flight attendants sat down in those seats that fold out of the wall. It felt like something straight out of a movie. The plane was shaking violently and things started falling out of the overhead bins as we went down at a very steep angle tilting left and right. I remember looking up and seeing one of the flight attendants doing the Catholic cross across her chest. We finally made it to the runway where we bounced on the ground from wheel to wheel, side to side, for what seemed like an eternity in my mind but was probably just a few seconds. Everyone clapped when it was over. It beats any roller coaster I've been on hands down.

On the one hand I felt bad for the guy. On the other, I was pretty annoyed that we all had to be impacted by his not following the rules. While we waited on the plane at the emergency landing airport, so many people were on their phones rearranging transportation or checking about making a connecting flight.

Worst ever - landing at Dallas. It was really rough going in for the landing (at the time i flew weekly for work) bad enough that the frequent fliers up front with me had put down their papers to just grit their teeth through the bumps. We were maybe aboit 100 feet off the ground and I was so happy we were finally almost on the ground. When we banked hard right and started to climb at an angle i didnt think was possible. People in the back started screaming. People up front looked out the window nervously. The pilot came on and explained a wind sheer warning went off so they had to immediately abort the landing. So we had to circle through that turbulent landing again. Two people were taken off the plant in oxygen and many people were sick.

Second worst was flying over the Atlantic and getting hit by lightning, which the pilot described as an electrical discharge.

Hang in there op!!! All will be well soon!!!

Mine was Miami to New Orleans. The pilot warned us it would be a rough ride, and boy was he right. I thought I was going to die surrounded by a$$holes, which is another story in itself.

I love turbulence - it's fun! I know the chance of something happening is very very low. And yes, I've been in some truly stomach churning turbulence.

Still hate roller coasters, however.

Cancun to Miami— the plane dropped several times, then rocked side to side. It was so terrifying and I think the only time in my life I ever started thinking I might be about to die. Passengers were screaming, praying out loud. The captain did a good job of explaining what had happened and warned it could happen again but that he was still in control of the plane.

When we got to Miami, our next flight was overbooked and I was more than happy to accept the money and hotel voucher to put off flying until the next day!

PP with the baby poop story -- they often poop with the pressure changes! I always kept a blanket on my lap during takeoff in case of explosive poops.

On a red eye home from Hawaii with my entire family. Plane had been overbooked so they had seated us separately all over the plane. Hit an air pocket and the plane dropped several hundred feet. The seatbelt sign was off. They had just served dinner. Food was everywhere. People hit the ceiling and were injured. We were halfway to the mainland so there were no good options and we just kept going and made an emergency landing in SF in the middle of the night. 7 people were carried off on stretchers. News cameras met us as we walked off the plane. It made national news. It was surreal. They said no one could get up until we landed but my dad ignored and went to check on all of us. My nephew was 1 and was riding on my SIL’s lap. Thank god she had a good grip on him at the time and he was fine. But since that trip my dad refuses to let us all take the same flights to vacations.

Planes can withstand way more turbulence than people would be willing to tolerate.

And never take your seatbelt off, unless it's to leave the seat. Which should be kept to a minimum.

Why is that? I don’t get it. I’d understand taking steps to sit together, though.

This thread isn’t comforting me. I hate flying. It’s claustrophobic and awful for me, ugh. And we are going to Europe this summer. I hate that I’m not excited because I’m so scared. I’m going to need lots of trashy magazines!
