I'm reading this thread with interest. My 8th grader failed his math SOL and we were sent an email regarding a retake. My feeling is, why bother?? He has a B average in this class - and was very stressed out about this stupid SOL. Is there any point in having him retake it? Other than being called out of class along with all the other retakers, so everyone can see who failed their SOL?

If this will impact him in any way going into high school, we'll have him retake it. If not, I just don't see the point.

He is taking Algebra for high school credit?

He has to have the passed SOL for high school. Google verified credits.

No, this is not Algebra. He's taking Math 8.

If he has a chance to retake it, I'd have him retake it. If not, it could negatively affect his math placement for next year.

How so? He has a B in Math 8. There is no reason he shouldn't take Algebra I next year.

I proctored and the math test seemed ridiculously hard (third grade)--much more so than just two years ago when I taught third grade.

Why would your DC need to retake the Algebra 2 SOL. Your DC should already have 2 verified math credits from Algebra 1 and Geometry. And it seems they placed your DC in the next level math anyway. I'd tell them no.
