Thank you for suggesting these two. I have been looking for a new book to read and will try this one: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/keeper-loves-flame-regine-olsen-soren-kierkegaard/

I think it is rare to see or experience that kind of enduring, forever, perfect love in real life. Share stories of yourself or others, family or friends, if you have been so lucky.

OP FWIW I think focusing on things like this actually makes it HARDER for people to find love like this. You're so focused on what it looks like in someone else that you can't build your own version and be satisfied with it. No couple is perfect.

And I feel like I have this with my husband and that my grandparents had it so its not like I don't think it exists, but I just don't think its useful to look at other couples. I dunno, I see this so much on DCUM, the grass is greener. I think a lot of posters here (abusive relationships aside) would be happier here if they allowed themselves to look at the good in their lives.

For the last 20 years of their marriage, my grandfather took care of my grandmother (who suffered from mental illness and then cancer as well later on) with incredible patience, kindness, and love. It was heartwarming to see that display of love and caring.

The day my third child was born my wife was in the hospital and was half asleep holding the baby with our two year old and four year old cuddled up to her on both sides of the bed. Even the nurses were teary.

I watched this one man over and over put person after person into the harness while he was treading water. He went under before they could get him out. He was just another passenger, and they were strangers to him, but he kept them safe.

My god.

This was the crash into the Potomac in the 80’s.

That is one of the greatest acts of bravery and selflessness imaginable. However, I would not necessarily call that “love”.

My dad saved many people during his years as a firefighter in an inner city. He would have died for any of them, but he wouldn’t say he loved them.
