GW vs. Tulane vs. Northeastern

Northeastern if she wants a co-op experience and a great job afterwards. I would think there are more opportunities and starts ups in Boston than NOLA.

GW is just too close to home. DC is toxic.

I would also compare other majors in Tulane and Northeastern for back-ups just in case computer science does not pan out.

I think that CS stands for ‘cognitive science’.

She is torn between the three and I am unsure how to steer her in the best direction! She is interested in computer science and would like to dual major in English or Psychology. She is also interested in neuroscience. We have visited them all and she loves the vibe at all three equally!

Any opinions?

Thanks!

No, it doesn't. ^^

Thanks for the replies. I agree that those schools are not known for their Comp Sci programs but she has only become interested in programming this year after taking an AP class and has started writing code. For the past five years she has only been interested in bio or Neuro. Her strengths are in the humanities and she wants a well rounded college.

She was also accepted to NYU, Brandeis, AU and a few others but did not receive as much merit money. She is still considering all the schools but Tulane, Northeastern and GW are her top three.

Any other thoughts are much appreciated! I'm very overwhelmed at this point -- my younger two are still in elementary school so thankfully I have some time before this crazy process starts again!

I think Northeastern is the best fit. Boston is a great college town, the campus has a college feel right in downtown, and east transportation to train and airport.

Tulane is a good fit too and obviously warmer weather.

Has she done overnights?

For computer science these would not have been my first choice, they excel in other areas but not necessarily CS. That aside, GW for sure would be first and Northeastern second, not a fan of Tulane, the kids I. know that have gone but not impressive and I somehow feel there would be more prestige/opportunity at GW in particular and then Northeastern especially with its location.

GW has zero prestige.

I would beg to differ my son had a wonderful experience and went on to Yale Law so clearly served him just fine

How much merit aid did your dd get? We toured NE and really liked it. I'm wondering how good they are about offering merit aid.

Northeastern? No way. Tulane, for sure.

Great explanation.

You will see her a lot more if she goes to GW.

Any final thoughts? She made a pro and con list for each school and she loves each school for a different reason:/ We are unable to attend any of the admitted students events because she doesn't want to miss school (except Tulane -- because we went over her spring break).

I know nothing about NE but I'm skeptical of their high ranking

They jumped over 100 spots in USNWR
Google it to learn more

Crazy stuff. I just read it so I'm fascinated by it.

I'm open to having my mind changed but.. I don't get how it's prestigious given its recent history

Many colleges try to gain ranking but if they are, they are working hard to increase their school in academics, buildings, students, and professors.

Northeastern is a beautiful condense campus in the middle of Boston. A much nicer atmosphere than the long stretch of BU. Their co-op and study abroad programs are top notch and because of the co-ops their graduation rates and those in employment within 6 months have sky rocketed. Drexel is trying to mimic them.

I think if the OP’s daughter wants an urban campus that focuses on employment, it is great. Tulane has a much larger range of majors/minors, has a more true campus vibe as not many people leave and come back the way Northeastern does. But Boston is a huge college city and there is a lot to go. Tulane students rarely leave Tulane. And of course the weather is much nicer in Tulane once you get passed the first month.
