Duh! Montreal is part of Quebec. Most people there speak English with an accent. Talking in french to locals should not be a problem. |
Obviously, my question was more related to how sequestered McGill students are vis a vis the general population. |
You can request to have any test given in French. Classes taught in french are cheaper and are not just in french department There are many clubs which encourage speaking in french. There is another campus for agricultural science an hour outside Montreal, there more people speak french. Most kids live off-campus for 3 years so ample opportunity to speak french |
| NP. My oldest is years away from the college application process, but this is all interesting. Apparently lots of kids go to McGill from kid's French immersion school, so I'm mentally filing this info away. |
| OP here. Thanks to all for the responses above - very helpful. My DC chose McGill! |
NP. I'm just seeing this but wanted to let you know that my brother AND my brother-in-law both attended McGill. They had great experiences there
Also, tell your kid to send you one of the cotton t-shirts from the gift shop. I have no idea what they do to those shirts, but the cotton is so soft, yet they last forever. My brother graduated in 2001 and I still wear mine regularly, although just around the house now. |

Got my MA at McGill after a BA at a top US private. I'm Canadian, married now to an American.
McGill was great for me, although it's a big school. In my case, a graduate degree in a small but very prestigious department was great, though I would not have thrived as an undergrad there. The sheer size makes for a very high reliance on Teaching Assistants for many of the intro classes. Not all that different from a State school. Montreal is an amazing city, and has a very rich and international culture. It's very much a lifestyle city rather than an economic powerhouse. McGill is one of Canada's best known universities, and has many famous grads who changed the world. This is the School of Pierre Trudeau, Leonard Cohen, a couple of Nobel winners, etc. Very well regarded internationally. |
Good input! How did the education translate when it came to jobs? Are you working in the US or Canada? |
