I gave up sugar and refined flour for Lent

Oh look - more cultural appropriation in the name of dieting

OP - I was raised Episcopalian so pardon me if some habits are still ingrained.

Anyway yes, I am a carb addict and thought this might help and that the timing is right. But that’s now between me and my higher powers because I’m done with this thread.

Why should you see results? Have you cut calories as well? Are you making up those calories with other food? If so, don't expect results.

Christian Lent is not just about giving up certain goods, it is clearly outlined that one should eat much, much less. Being pious, many things. One day water fast, one oil, one fish, as per calendar. As you posted yesterday, are you Orthodox? You should know that many Orthodox Christians take lend very seriously and your post feels flippant. Giving up sugar is a good thing anyway, but the way you are doing its nothing to do with lent. I always say if you do something do it right, you are doing it wrong. Give up meat.

Are you still drinking your calories and sugars - frappes, smoothies, hot chocolate, and the like?
You may be giving up chocolate, candy, donuts, and desserts, but if you're still ordering a vente frapp 3 very other day than you're negating/not making much visible weight loss.

Serious Catholic here and your post doesn't seem flippant to me. I gave up wine for Lent (with a similar hope that it will spur some weight loss) and I feel very comfortable with that choice. Read the canon on this: the fast is supposed to involve an element of self-discipline as well as directing more resources toward the poor and remembering Jesus' own sacrifices.

For me, the fact that I can deny myself certain 'treats' during Lent that I have trouble denying myself most of the rest of the year is also a useful reminder that I can do more with and for God than simply for myself. Not a bad takeaway, and if I can be a little healthier too, that's not a bad thing. So kudos to you.
