Anyone buying a bullet-proof backpack?

Are they being made by the NRA?

No such thing as bulletproof. There are varying levels of bullet resistance.

My daughter isn't allowed to keep her backpack with her during school. It has to stay in her locker.

No. I refuse to give my kids more reason to be fearful. We are just not going to live like that.

Good for you. And, unlike the people who buy these, you probably understand math (specifically, statistics), too.

Do you kid's school classrooms have closets?

Thursday evening, both kids reported that they went over where they were to hide/shelter in each of their classrooms in the event of a shooter. In most cases it was in the corner horizontal to the door because most classrooms don't have closets.

My daughter's AP lit teacher rearranged her room so that she has two very tall bookcases in their shelter spot that can quickly and easily be moved to create a barricade for them. She came into school early that morning with her husband to unload and move the bookcases to that location. That's incredibly sad, but I'm very thankful for her going the extra mile to rearrange to try to create sturdy barriers for them should they ever need them.

Actually, for the first time in more than 60 years, firearms and automobiles are killing Americans at an identical rate, according to the most mortality data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Few people would term the possibility of getting killed in a car accident as rare, in the way that getting killed by being hit by lightning is truly rare. Since you have such a profound understanding of statistics, you know that the US is an outlier among developed countries in its level of gun violence.
