“Irresponsible” for getting a promotion

And Op, it means you're good at what you do.

Not your battle, not your drama. If the new boss doesn’t like the drama, that’s between him and HR. All I’d say at this point is “when do I start and where.”

Agreed. You may also want to let your new boss know that you followed protocol to the letter.

I’ve been unhappy with my manager and the team I’m on has a lot of dysfunction. There was a promotion opportunity in another division. I applied and I got it. It’s a title and pay bump, more autonomy etc.

I gave notice to manager - he was ok. The next day I get a scathing call from my bosses boss. How I was “irresponsible” for applying, I should have let my manager approve my application (HR signed off per company protocol ), and that it looks like I’m running away. He wants to block (best case: delay) my move because “the other team is stealing his resources”.

I followed company protocol. I went through the process like everyone else. I was honest and transparent. I asked new boss to approve me supporting one of my existing projects to see it through. And now I may end up with no job. New boss is not amused by drama.

Not once did anyone ask me how I was doing, or what my career goals were or even say “nice job”. So, what do I do now?

Go straight to HR to let them know about this call. Do not take any more of this guy's phone calls directly - force him to leave a voice mail or talk to you in person. Have your cell phone ready to record discreetly. And consult an employment lawyer just in case you need one. I would think that, if you followed company protocol and HR signed off on the process and promotion, you'd have a hell of a case on your side for suing the shit out of them should they dismiss you. This sounds like textbook retaliation to me.

Retaliation for what?

It is against the law in some states to record phone calls without consent.

I would ignore this person and let them go to voicemail and leave their messages though. And respond by email if you MUST respond ccing folks. I would check with the new boss anout your start date and prepare for the job change.

If her promotion was denied and current boss fired her, as OP seems to be suggesting, that would be retaliation. Classic case. Not that this is likely to happen if HR at OP's employer has any sense at all. I concur with others who suggest she should remain professional, do her job, wait for her start date, and let HR/new boss deal with the situation. If anyone should be fired, it sounds like OP's current boss would be a good candidate.

I'd go straight to HR and tell them to fix it. I gave notice at a job a few years ago and my boss threatened to call my new place of employment to tell them they couldn't take me. People behave badly all the time, but you don't need to talk to this guy. Let others figure it out.

Op here - old boss called new boss and said a bunch of bad things about me. New boss said “I have access to (OPs) Performance Reviews which are all Excellent. WTF is your problem?!” Now it’s getting escalated.

Ugg. Now what?

Can I end up unemployed??

Just a note: every review, conversation etc with old boss has been good on paper.. so it’s not like I was a bad employee..

Not likely you'll end up unemployed. If so, you should seek out legal counsel immediately.

You can't just sue "for retaliation." It has to be for some protected act, like whistleblowing. Good Lord people.

If you WERE a bad employee, then he should be glad you're leaving, right? I mean, does anyone get pissed off about a bad employee leaving?

I don't see how you would end up unemployed. It's clear your new boss is fighting for you. I would think your worst case scenario is your current boss fires you, and you start with new boss even sooner.

What a nightmare, OP! I think you will be OK in the end but your old boss might not be.
