There’s some “backup” system that kicks in with the electric when it gets really cold. We had the same thing happen (unusually high electric bill in the winter) and I think that’s what happened. |

| These utility bills seems really high. Last month when it was really cold, we paid $220 for electric, $120 for gas, but our house is 6,000 sq ft recent construction house. |
new construction has better insulation and more efficient HVAC components |

2800 sq ft SFH in DC, recently renovated and insulation improved. 2 adults, 2 children
Electric - 119 Gas - 137 Cable/internet 163 Water and sewer - 166 Cell (3 phones) 157 These are my most recent bills, not an average. I think the water is crazy high but water fees have gone up exponentially to pay for a multi billion dollar clean water project, the DC Clean Rivers Project. |

Question for the group -- why do water bills vary so much?
Ours was $780 total last year for a family of four in a little over 2000 sf. We are not profligate but others seem to be paying half that. Is it laundry? Long showers? Old water heater? Leaks?? Or does one state charge more (I am in MoCo). We just installed low flow showerheads, maybe need to do that for faucets too. |
