What if your child does not get into college?

I'd be really careful about cc -- it could impact the next application if they are transfer. I'd consider a gap year but also would talk to a college consultant.

There are always overpriced expensive college who will take most kids. There are also other colleges with rolling admissions. Or, community college.

"Frostburg State University accepts applications on a rolling basis, starting on September 15 and continuing until there is no further space for students."

I don't think they have ever filled all their spaces for an in-state student who has the $23k.

Anyone who uses UVA as a safety sounds like an idiot and they deserve what they get.

I would send my kid to Montgomery College before I would send him to Frostburg.

Apply at a "real" safety school or good smaller college. Most less selective places will still have openings in the summer for the fall.

No. The commuting days are long gone. It has operated as a real campus for quite some time. DS was admited EA a few years back. It's the standard admissions rules, no rolling anything. Lots of her friends and DD no 2's friends did not get in. NVCC might be an option however.

List of colleges with rolling admission that you can apply to late if that seems to be happening. Pitt, Alabama, Maine are popular colleges from the list.

Every year, there is a list of schools published that still have opening. Last year, some brand name schools were on there.

That usually only happens because parents or students did not pay attention to the most basic advice on the application process. Typical high achievers leaven their high expectations with some reality. If a student were to have to take a gap year, rather than attending a local commuter school, then the focus should be on his/her personal growth, not how to frame an application for the schools that rejected him.

Not anymore. I know 2 relatively high-achieving students who didn't get into any colleges last year because neither applied to a true safety school (one in Virginia who was using W&M/UVA as safeties and one in California who used UCSD/UCLA as safeties). One kid is now going to a school which was still accepting applications in April and the other is taking a gap year.

That is really, really stupid. And delusional.

I'm not going to be judgemental because I believe it's not an option for some families to apply to many schools. Application fees and SAT, ACT, AP exam mailing requests can be financial burden to many families.

I would avoid CC and try to find a job in the field of study. If not, finding any job is easier to explain on the next college application that the gap year was meant to save money for college.

This generation is the largest population. It's realistic that deserving kids will not receive acceptances. I hope your child finds comfort in learning that true test in character is getting back up, not avoiding the fall.

We're starting our college search with the question "OK, what would be a good safety? A school where I'm at of above the 75th percentile of scores and grades that I would love to attend?".

After that, we'll aim higher.
