Even in the new conference, TJ kids are usually much smaller than their opponents, and are getting hit— hard— play after play. With the research on CTE, I do not understand parents who have kids smart enough to go to TJ and are willing to risk their brains. For a sport TJ kid will never be good enough at to play at the college level. I’m big on being non-judgementL and “you do you” at atJ, but I think less of parents who lets their kids play football. Bad parenting

There are quite a few no cut sports at TJ. PP mention crew, which is great and takes newbies. Try a different sport.

+1.

Schools like TJ, Langley and Mclean should cancel football program altogether.

yep

peer schools like princeton-plainsboro have done so.

football won't exist at those three schools in 20 years IMO.

Right.
Have to protect those upper class elitist brains.

No we should be protecting ALL brains. But you gotta start somewhere. And good luck starting with my Friday Night Lights HS alma mater, where football players are gods, and many kids view football as their only chance of going to college and finding a way way out of depressed flyover nowhere. There is too much support for football at some schools to just get rid of it. 95% of TJ, on the other hand, could GAF.

But isn't football one of the few no cut team sports in the fall?

I don’t think XCountry is cut. But even if footballl is the only no cut school sport for boys in the fall, have your kid play a club sport, or do band or drama or volunteer or literally anything else. You don’t let your get get brain damage just because they can do a no cut sport. Come on. Act like a parent.

Once we get rid of football, we can move on to soccer.

I could understand the concern if TJ was playing other schools in FCPS, but their opponents last year almost literally were the Sisters of Mercy. Like charter schools in DC with enrollments of 150 kids.

And yet TJ racked up only one win. Plus a default by the deaf school because their whole team got suspended when they were caught with pot. Band parent who watched the games here. Even when TJ played the school where all the kids played offense and defense had kids who were huge beside the TJ kids. And the QB got sacked on every lay. They tried. But they just don’t have the size (or, let’s face it— the talent).

This is largely about TJ parents and students not being able to accept defeat gracefully. If they don't win, it's not worth their time.

Their varsity roster was actually bigger than the roster of some other schools in NoVa. And they played some other FCPS schools (Lee, Edison, Stuart) that have a lot of kids who are the children or immigrants and didn't grow up around football. The white and Korean kids at TJ are just as likely to weigh 175 lbs as the kids at Lee from Eritrea.

+1. Though I think it's mostly the parents.

Actually not true. TJ sweeps the academic competitions. And does well in some sports, like crew and tennis. In others, they flat out suck, and win only one or two matches a season. And yet they play in the conference year after year. They are smaller than the kids from other FCPS schools. The last year they played FCPS schools, they gave up an average of 40-50 pounds a player. That’s not my guess based on watching the games. That was the information provided to parents when their conference and the coaches decided it was not safe to have TJ play other FCPS schools any longer. This year they won one game they played, and won a game by forfeit, because the other school suspended their team. If you ask anyone at TJ, they are proud of their “winning” season.

This is a school where math tests have an average grade in the 60s, with no curve, and virtually no one graduates with an unweighted 4.0 and the basketball team is painful to watch, but still tries. TJ kids probably are better at dealing with setbacks and poor grades and losing than base school kids— because they are in an environment where it is not uncommon to work hard and still get a C and where grade inflation is not common. Saying that they can’t cope with a losing football team, when they regularly deal with Cs and DS on tests is ridiculous. But concussions and TBIs and CTEs and broken bones— that’s another matter. Adults should not be letting kids play in that case.

And Lee may have a small roster. I don’t know. TJ does not field a separate JV team. But Lee does not have an entirely Asian roster, where the kids top out at 110 pounds. They also have white, Hispanic and AA kid with different, larger body types. Maybe it’s fun for you to watch Lee kids tackle a TJ. Up the school and coaches and teachers have an obligation to keep the kids safe.

They did well in tennis and crew because both the crew and tennis rosters are almost completely filled with Asians and Indians. What do you expect?

You don't need to have an actual blow to the head to cause a concussion. Hits to the mid-body can cause a rapid back-and-forth motion to the head that causes a concussion.

I don't know about the tennis team, but you are wrong about the crew team.

This is just full of lies. TJ did play three FCPS opponents last year. They just made sure they were the weakest teams in their district. And the players on the TJ squad were not all Asian, either. You have just manufactured a narrative to make TJ’s unwillingness to compete with other schools sound like the sensible and humane thing to do, when it was more the case that TJ decided it was tired of losing.
