Wow! What school? Our school doesn’t even have 100 fifth graders.

Our school has 150 5th graders!

So then every single parent is applying? Yeesh!

Is the waitlist divided by MS somehow? (Sorry for the ignorant Q, we're looking at doing this lottery next year)

Yeah, dd was 4 and never got in. There just isn’t that much turnover.

I think it's by ES. Unless you're in an option school, then you list your zoned ES.

Got a phone call at 5:30 pm. We are #45 in the lottery (not waitlist). They are taking 75 so I think we may get in. Fingers crossed. They said it depends on school allocations.

Clearly, the overwhelming HB lottery turnout suggests that APS needs to make school size a much bigger priority.

We're past the point of switching schools, but if I had a fifth grader right now, I'd rank crowding higher than

* program characteristics (HB is supposed to be about their specific program, which is not a great fit for my kid, but did I mention crowding?)

* IB opportunities (This is a great fit for my kid, but did I mention crowding?)

* He could walk to our zoned school (But did I mention crowding?)

Did anyone else get in?

I mean, in what world do parents NOT try to get their child into a brand new $100 million dollar architectural wonder with a capped enrollment and when the alternative is a mega school with inadequate actual seats? We need a 4th comprehensive HS or three more H-B Woodlawns. Pick your poison.

It's been like this long before MS/HS overcrowding was an issue or before the new HB building was on the table, though

This is a BS process for a school like this. Kids should have to apply like for private school because it’s not a good fit for most kids.

+1. We will lottery HB and apply for private in two years. We love our friends and neighbors so moving out of county is a last resort.

My 8th grade DD was offered a spot at HBW but will do the IB program at W-L instead, so there will be at least one more spot opening up for a rising 9th grader!
