I'm younger than you, OP, and if I get up from sitting or lying down, my knees are stiff, so I walk down stairs whatever way I think will keep me from tumbling down them!

| If it is balance, i recommend you start doing Yoga. It is gentle, and will help. |
| I'm 52, no real knee/hip/foot issues or balance issues. But I slipped and fell down the stairs 1 year ago and now, frankly, I am scared of falling again. I go pretty gingerly down the stairs at home. |
