Test scores are the beginning and end at my Title One school. Every piece of data is another source of how crappy the teachers are. Past admins have had no issue just yelling at us about how we are letting our students down. I doubt my friends in the county schools get yelled at for their data.

This is my experience at a Title 1 school, too.

There should be a way to test teachers who can't teach. There are some great teachers, but the bad ones can really hurt a student. Not just that year but in subsequent years. How else could you identify these teachers? If there is a problem with what the school is teaching or students learning that can be fixed. If there is a problem with the teacher that can be fixed. All professions have a measuring stick to test performance. If your data is bad do something to fix it-that means something wrong. All kids deserve a good education.

How about observation by admin?

Because everyone acts fine when their boss is in the room-teacher or not a teacher. Plus, if scores are down across the board the administration is failing-perhaps both the teachers and the students. They are driving the ship. If teachers are failing due to an institutional problem that needs to be fixed too. The testing shows something is not working. Not paying attention and fixing only hurts the kids.

Parents have to be willing to step up to the plate and once they have tried to work with the teacher, if issues persist, put complaints in writing. Show administration examples of crappy teacher instructional materials sent home for the kids to study. Bad teachers will provide the wrong info and not care. Show emails where the teacher gets hyperdefensive and can't even answer the most basic, simple and polite questions. Those of us willing to do this are told we are alone. Plenty of parents complain to me and expect me to be their leader and complain. YOU have to jump on board too.

By the same token, when you have a winner, let administration know. Nominate that person for an award. Do whatever you can to keep those people wanting to stay.
