Huh? These are some of the most highly selective schools in the nation. Rethink your definition of average...

OP, to answer your question:
UMBC
University of Illinois Chicago
GMU
Clemson
Ursinus
Elon

Heard Clemson is getting harder...

I've heard that too. Just looked at Naviance for our MD 'W" HS and the last to classes (2016 and 2017) shows and admit rate of 36% (14/39).
Wonder what is going on there.

Clemson gives a lot of merit aid. Appeals to donut hole families. Wonderful set up campus. Warm weather. Only issue is it is in no man’s land.

LOL!!! I went to UIC about 10 years ago. I wish this was true, but no. So much no. The only thing it has going for it is people sometimes get confused on the name with University of Chicago if people aren't in touch with colleges.

UIC will not give you a "college experience" either in terms of campus and student life.

A lot has changed in 10 years. You should go back! From Chicago originally (went to NU) and did the whole range from NU to UIC. Was very pleasantly surprised at UIC. I always thought of it as a commuter school. No more my friend!

You're going to have to provide GPA and SAT/ACT scores; otherwise, the term "average" on DCUM means someone who isn't a shoe-in for a top 25 school.

Average being 3.5 GPA (3.8 WGPA) and SAT's in the 1200-1250 range.

We took a road trip to NYC and decided to look at some CT schools while we were up there. DS loved Sacred Heart University and Fairfield University. I went to one of the Claremont colleges and thought these schools seemed a lot like the CMC/Pomona college experiences with a little more D1 sports spirit. My DS is defintely an average student or lower by DCUM standards (3.1/28 ACT/1200 SAT) and the best fit is our priority.

How is the merit aid here for OOS students?

About 1/3 of the students get merit aid.

STEM and business oriented students should look at Clarkson University. If you can look past the location, you will find a great school. They offer large merit aid packages to non-NY state students.

My vote is Clemson. They are looking to attract OOS kids, esp from this area. I heard somewhere that they wanted to become more STEM-focused and the “Ga Tech if SC”(not sure what that means). But I think soon a degree from there will be really impressive, if not already,

I know a dozen Clarkson grads who all rave about it.

However, all tell tails of exactly what it feels like to be outside when it is -40F with absolutely no wind.

Clemson has become increasingly difficult to gain admittance. I don't think the average stas posted by OP will cut it here.
Freshman Class of 2017
OOS Admit Rate - 54% (slightly higher than in-state rate of 50%)
Middle 50% SAT: 1230-1390
Avg. WGPA - 4.43
