We talked to someone at a curriculum night that they were moving towards offered IM for all 6th graders and I quote “Because it was becoming apparent the kids not in IM were feeling segregated and noticed most minorities were not in IM.”

So basically they are looking towards a streamline middle school Math now to not hurt anyone’s feelings. So they will dumb down IM and offer it to everyone in the next 1-2 years. Just another reason the increased poor and immigrant population is crushing any chances for kids to advance at any level. Gotta pray for a magnet.

Are you sure that is what MCPS is proposing or is this specific to one school? So they plan to let most kids skip Math 6? Only the kids in compacted math would have finished math 6 if they go ahead with that plan. That doesn't make any sense or else every child is enrolled in compacted math 5/6 in 5th grade.

The plan is to have everyone in compacted math. EVERYONE. No lie. I wish I knew the lady's name. I was floored at the stupidity of how it sounded And no, it was for everyone, not just our cluster.

That would terrible!!!!! As it is, my ds already struggles with math and needs the slower, regular grade math. Compacted math for him would be a disaster.

Now my older son's class, almost the entire 95+ kids were recommended for IM7 even if they did not take CM in 4th & 5th grade. MCPS needs to focus on put each child on the right path for their individual ability!!!

IM in 7th is now standard; see link in above post.

I took her post as recommending everyone in IM7 in 6th grade, even if they didn't take compact math. Our school is starting to do the same. Compact math used to be for a small group of kids. Now 70% are in it and 85% are being recommended for IM in 6th. Ridiculous.

They are heading that way. MCPS dumbs down curriculum so everyone can joins hands together. God forbid if the lower math levels look too dark skin. We can't have that.

I miss track math classes. Kids as young as grade 1 were tracked. They could be in Math 2, Math 1 accelerated, Math 1, or Math 1 with review. Four different options for one grade. Now we are streamlining kids. It is just terrible.

Do they still offer accelerated math in elementary?

No. There is one option for compacted math entering 4th grade. That is it. Otherwise they pull groups within classes of various levels which means an hour of busy work or helping other for the kids that are above grade level. They will say they offer enrichment but they don't. One sheet of paper HW in 3rd that my daughter finishes in 2-3min on the bus ride home.

My kids are in high school now, but when they were in ES, the advanced math curriculum was for the true high fliers. This was a select group of students who really excelled at math and went on to do IM in 6th grade. These are the same students who have gone on to complete AP calculus in 11th and multi-variable in 12th grade. IM used to be a pretty robust class and most 6th graders were not ready for it which I found out to be the case of one of my kids who we moved back from 6th grade IM. Something in the IM and the math curriculum has clearly changed over the years if all of the kids are taking it.
