I don't like the idea that chromebooks need to be internet connected. We got our kids very cheap laptops, but I must say that they seem to have problems with them all the time. I think I would have been better off paying for a mid-range laptop, instead.
(By 9th grade, my dd really, really wanted a mac laptop and I finally gave in and she LOVES it. But that's definitely high end.) |

We have an HP Stream which can run office (and actual office is pretty expensive, are you sure you need the real think not libreoffice or google docs?

I bought mine a $350 laptop. It lasted 2.5 years.
Fairfax County also has Microsoft office for free for their students. |
