Is Ashley Wagner a Spoiled Sport?

Figure skating requires more athleticism than golf, football, baseball and some track and field events like javelin and shot put.

So yes, figure skatng is a sport.

More than wrestling, volleyball, bobsledding....

It was put up or shut up time, and she sure didn't put up.

Karen Chen earned the bronze; she had two good programs, and was battling an illness. I'm hoping she recovers and does an even better job at the Olympics.

I’d like to see YOU do a triple axel, snowflake.

And more than downhill skiing.

Any one of dcum's middle aged housewives could put on a pair of skiis and successfully down hill ski after an hour or two experience. They could ski quite well after a couple of trips to the slope.

To stay on your skates and do even the most basic of figure skating jumps requires a lot of training and athletic ability.

I usually like Ashley, and I'm disappointed for her, but man she needs to shut up sometimes. You can't come fourth at National's in an Olympic and expect to be named to the Olympic team two cycles in a row.

So happy for Mirai!

She got the extra push last time to step over someone else. That she thinks she should get it again this year as a 4th place finisher (again) is the epitome of "entitled." Entitled athletes are not likable and not people we want to cheer for. If she had been gracious, the press would have told her story of missing out in a sympathetic way. She would have a positive image for endorsements.

Not she just a complainer who couldn't cut it in competition.

This is exactly the reason why none of my children, and I have 4, participate in ice skating, basketball, baseball, football or any extra activities that involve a coach or panel that will decide who can and can not make the team. This is especially so true at the high school level and lot of politics and favors with parents. The outcome is often rigged.

Two of my kids play tennis and the other two play golf. In those two sports, team members and seeding is solely based on head to head competition via match play. At the end of the day, those that have the most wins make the team. Those that have the least, good luck next season.

Devil's advocate here but playing sports with a judging element prepared me a lot for the workplace, where bosses already have favorites, promotions are rigged, there are tons of politics/nepotism/favors, and you may not agree with someone else's assessment of you.

Oh yeah. I learned how to stand up for myself and tell somebody to go f@ck themselves when warranted. It’s great for girls!

She has been nothing but an excuse machine for the last year and a half. She managed to self-promote herself into a lot of endorsements at the exact time she was losing ground on the ice, so yay for her pocketbook, I guess, but I think her ridiculous display of bad sportsmanship yesterday was related to the imminent disappearance of the dollar signs. Oh, well. She didn’t do her job, but expected to be handed an Olympic spot for the second time. Thank God it didn’t happen.

I have NEVER been a fan of Wagner's. There's something about her that is so over-confident and arrogant. Also, can't stand the way she "emotes" on the ice. Buh bye, Ash!

Wow, Wagner is the example of what not to do for all our kids. Complete lack of sportsmanship and horrible sense of entitlement. She was gifted a spot in the last Olympics and clearly expected to be gifted again.

Does anyone have a link to the post competition interview? I watched the competition, but turned it off before that part.

Her performance had mistakes and she ended up in 4th because of it. I would have been pissed if the selection committee would have chosen her for the Olympic team.

There’s a link in the entertainment forum thread. Also, she got into the olympics last time after placing 4th!

+1. Get it right, OP.

Loved her silver World Championship performance.

So I'm no Ashley hater. That being said, girl, get OVER yourself. Your team bronze was not because of you, it was because of Davis and White. Believe it.
