Car seats and coats in this cold weather

In just a few short years, even when your kids are riding in booster seats, they will be relying on the car's seat belts which are a lot less tight, and will, by design (so that you can move around in the seat), yield several inches in a collision before locking in place.

This coat worry is yet another Mommy nonsense fear.

Their bones will be stronger once they're in booster seats. Please go watch youtube videos of how much safer no coats vs coats truly are.

NP. That's not scientific, those videos are all absurd. I agree with PP that if you put a coat on a child and put the child in a car seat, the child will be fine in a crash.

I can attest that my kids, in coats, were fine in our recent car crash. The car was totaled but the passengers were all fine, all wearing coats.

Exactly. No one tells adults to take their coats off. Make sure the straps are as tight as you can get WITH the coat on. Put the chest clip in the right place. And as always, drive with care and caution.

I would like to see a documented instance of a child being seriously injured or ejected from their car seat as a result of wearing a coat in the car. Yes, I saw the crash test footage from the Today show last year/a few years ago, and even then I could see the crash test dummy wasn’t properly restrained even with the coat ... the straps were VERY loose and the chest clip was way too low on the belly.

Please post a video that shows correct strap usage (tight and chest clip correct) with a coat on and still has a dramatic effect.

I remove my daughter's coat in the car seat but I agree, those videos are completely bogus.

My struggle is the mom shaming over my kid not wearing a coat. It's hard to get coats on her, so it's not a 10 second step when we get out of the car. I typically just hold her close to me and run into the grocery store quickly and then try to wrestle with the coat. But inevitably, an old woman will comment on what a bad mom I am.

Oh and she keeps taking off her shoes and socks anytime she's in the car. Fun times.

Tights would solve the socks-off problem.
Baby, it's cold out there!

+1. The insanity of this stuff is really reaching fever pitch.

(PS- sorry about your accident PP).

Eh, I take off her coat when we get to the car, she gets in the seat and I buckle her in, and then I tuck the coat around her like a blanket. She's not going to freeze to death in the 30 seconds that this takes.

I feel like this coat issue is just another strategy to get more money out of parents and create more of an industry around “car seat technicians” and car seat safe coats. Oh and another opportunity for virtue signaling by parents.

I put both kids in thin fleece (not Patagonia, which when I looked this weekend was $75 ) Gives them an extra layer but is not puffy like a winter coat. I get looks at daycare as it seems I'm the only one.

If it's really cold and it's more than a 2 minute walk to the car this is what we do. She's got one warmer, thinsulate coat that would be okay in the car seat, but she refuses to wear it in the car seat.

If it's not that cold and we're not out for more than 10 min or so, she's got a light, thin jacket on and she wears that in the car seat. We keep a heavier jacket at daycare for playground time.
