$85 an hour is cheap??

How about instead of all of you pushing your kids spending thousands on them, just let them take the level of math that works for their current brain.

Your reply shows your ignorance. Math instruction at school is often weak. Many students need additional help or different explanations. The "math that works for their brain" isn't a function of level, it is a function of ways of explaining and practicing. It is rate that a teacher in school has more than one way of explaining math, and even more rare that there is time to introduce multiple methods or explanations.

MCPS teacher here, I suggest a subscription to tenmarks.com. A one-year subscription works wonders and shows you how Common Core math works. It will give you a daily/weekly progress report on your child. You can assign grade levels above or below skills that your child is working on. Its very helpful for prepping for MAP or PARCC. I use this as a math technology center for my students.

MCPS teacher here, instruction is not weak but fast paced and doesn't allow for in-depth analysis due to a crammed curriculum and trying to teach all the standards for PARCC and MAP. Parents are their child's first teacher. Your child is only in school for 6 hours, two of which are a special/lunch/recess block. Which means your child is only receiving 4 hours of direct instruction, PP stop being lazy and get some workbooks to work with your kid at home. Stop expecting the school to teach your child everything.

Let me clarify. When I said, "math instruction is weak," what I meant is that MCPS math teachers don't really understand math very well. Our children have been taught incorrect math formulas, concepts and shoddy techniques.

Khan academy is great and free.

We use Princeton Review online tutoring. You buy a bank of minutes each month. It has worked wonders for my DS and wish we found sooner. Having someone readily available when he needs it has been great, given our schedules.

We've concluded the same. From the fifth grade teacher who's grammar wasn't strong enough to write unambiguous story problems to the. Calc teacher who doesn't grock existence theorems, lots of weak math instruction in MCPS.

WHOA I should be a tutor! $85/he is cheap? Who are these tutors? BS degrees? Ph.D? Education majors?

I don't think you can beat Mathnasium. My son has been enrolled for over a year and loves it! We pay for 8 hours per month -- cost is $209 per month. The price does vary quite a bit per location -- we live in Upper Montgomery County. The cost averages out to about $25/per hour. It is great that your daughter is now working at grade level. Especially if you take her at a less busy time -- sometimes my son is the only student and has the tutor all to himself!

I have a high school kid who would like to tutor math, so I am coming at this problem in reverse. I would recommend posting on your school list serve, so a mom with a kid like that would try to connect with you. You could join your high school list serve early, at least at some schools, or ask a HS parent you know to post for you on the HS list serve.
