OP here. Woke me up at 2:10am with gentle whining, crate clean, but peed right outside the crate when I let him out! Then did a tiny dribble outside. Does that count as a win? Wow. I'm going to be a zombie at the Christmas Eve dinner tonight! |

OP here.
Apparently I am chronicling my first puppy experience on here! Puppy woke me up at 6am. If we can do 10pm, 2am and 6am again for tonight, but without accidents, that would be great! |
OMG! OP! A little Samoyed!! I ddin't read the entire thread but can you post a picture if you haven't already? Your updates are making me LAUGH and bringing back memories of my first experience raising a puppy three years ago. I was CLUELESS I don't know where you llive but if it's a cold climate, it makes it even more "memorable." My little English black lab would start whining (I think he missed his brothers and sisters - which KILLED me) at all hours, whether he needed to go out or not. We wanted to teach him to use the potty in one area of the yard so at all hours the puppy and I would traipse several yards to where one of the old Christmas trees is planted and he'd run around it while I shivered in the cold ... and I'd do it again and again. I also slept on the floor next to his crate so he wouldn't awaken anyone else - I did this for a couple weeks.
So yeah, OP - you've chosen a PARTICULARLY challenging time of year for a new puppy but ya know what? Best present EVER! And brilliant choice in breeds - not only are Samoyed's gorgeous but I've heard they don't smell!!! But that's when I knew I was in love because my dog does all the nasty dog things that kept me from having one ... and I wouldn't change a thing about him ... well, except he keeps chewing up his elderly brother's beds and it's getting expensive
Enjoy, OP. Keep us updated... and get some sleep (that was me being passive-aggressive)

When mine was that young, I’d pick her up from the crate and carry her out. Especially in the midddle of the night. |

Well if you gotten through your first night! Congratulations. As the other posters have said you will need to get up every couple of hours. For me my puppy is now only six months old but when I got him I did not wait for him to whine to ask me to go out. I woke up a couple of times in the night and just took him out on my own schedule and we never had an accident. Maybe I was lucky as potty training was incredibly easy. I also worked from home that first week. As such I could take him out every couple of hours to get him used to the idea of always going outside. We had a total of three accidents with him as a baby. He is six months old now and just a joy to have. We are now heavily involved in his obedience training. I don’t know if breed matters in terms of potty training but my dog is a miniature poodle.
Enjoy your new puppy! |

In case this helps: When mine was teeny we got a 5x7 piece of linoleum from Home Depot, put it down like a rug, put a playpen on top of that and his crate and bowls and bed were inside.
It definitely saved the carpet from some “right outside the crate” piddles and we could put him in there when we were home but busy with somethin and didn’t wAnt to crate him. Probably a proper house wouldn’t need this but in a carpeted rental it was clutch. |
| Definitely carry outside at first! It will reduce the accidents. Good luck! |

OP here. Thanks, everyone, particularly 07:39. When I figure out how to include photos, I will. Update on toys. He doesn't like any of them apart from his steel wire brush and comb! He bent the bristles. The breeder gave them deer antlers. Maybe I should one of those, or something equally hard and bristly? |
| The toys our puppy liked at first were stuffed toys that made a crinkly sound. I’ve had good luck finding toys at places like Tuesday Morning. We didn’t get any deer antlers until later but she does like them. |
| Pick him up from the crate with a pee pad under him. I would not give him antlers until adult teeth come in. |
OP, we are getting a Samoyed puppy in September. Are you still around? Did you survive the first year ?
