Air travelers and their carry-ons

I always keep my valuables in my carry on, there's no way I'll check it unless I am forced to.

Because I'd have to re-pack my other carry-ons to keep the things I don't want checked.

Because I paid for 4 seats and I'm well within my carry on allotment with only one rollerboard and 2 or 3 smaller bags for the entire family.

Because I'm traveling with kids who get motion sickness and need change of clothes for everyone.

Because I don't want the hassle of our stuff being lost or stolen.

Baggage claim takes no time at all. Put your must haves and valuable in a SMALL carryon that fits under your seat.

I don't mind gate checking my carryon if it's returned at the jetway at the end of the flight, but I don't do it if it's going to end up at the baggage claim.

the problem is not the carry on, its the fact the people are bringing 2-3 carry ons.

airline need to limit it to ONE carry one per person. if woman brings a purse. BAM thats her carry on. if a guy brings a back pack. thats it.

make a rule, stick to it and be consistent with the enforcement.

Don't want to wait at baggage claim especially if your luggage is small enough to fit. I travel light. Like a back pack. And if it doesn't fit in the top compartment, I put them down by the feet. Some of the compartments in small planes are pretty small. People jam it in there.

But, I do get annoy if someone's luggage appear to be too big and worse, they have TWO of them! Then, they carry other stuff, like a pillow, drinks, and handbag. What the heck!

No.

Whenever this happens on my flights the bags are always gate-checked so grab it on the Tarmac or jet bridge - no risk of it being lost and you don't wait at baggage claim.

They have made a rule. One carry-on and one smaller personal bag.

Same reason as many PPs here — I pack light and don’t like waiting at the baggage claim. I never know how long my bag is going to take to come out, I always get anxiety that someone will accidentally take my bag, and I just don’t want to spend any longer than strictly necessary at the airport upon landing. I’m ready to get out right away!

I have had gate-checked luggage lost twice.

I’ve travelled a lot in the past few years and never had a bag go missing, plus I carry on a small bag with the essentials, just in case. I guess I’ve waited a while at baggage claim sometimes, but nothing outrageous.

My luggage has been delayed 3 times in my life. Once it delayed a group of 10 on a ski trip. Another time I was in Europe and it had to be delivered to my hotel. The last was on a weekend trip to Vegas. It also delays you getting out of the airport.

We are a family of 5 and we travel light. We just carry on everything with us. the kids take a backpack each. we usually have 2 normal sized carry on luggage. Then I have a diaper bag for our infant.

Exactly this. I can see someone thinking my DH is carrying on a lot of items but it is for 4-5 paid seats.

False.
I've waited over 30min at DCA and let's not even talk about IAD.

So my reasons are same as others give, though I will sometimes voluntarily check a bag if I'm on the way home and can easily give it up. But reasons are:
--carrying electronics / photo equipment that can't safely be checked
--heading away from home and want my at least my first day's stuff with me
--don't want to wait at baggage

In addition to electronics, I sometimes carry evidence from work trips (potential evidence, really). It can’t be checked and should not be FedExed.
