I think I offered someone with a sexual harassment joke.

This is you being insensitive, and insensitive people are not liked, trusted or respected.

Do you understand that in the current context, it's a bad idea to make jokes about sexual harassment? Would you make a joke about bombs in the airport, given our climate of terrorism?

Apart from your weird joke I can't understand, all the rest is perfectly true. It's just not appropriate at work right now.

For example, there is a difference between creeping of 14 yo's, and asking a coworker out. How there is a scale; some actions will get you reprimanded, while others are straight on assault.

Then, the subject of Franken came up. And I joked, it is a consent issue with the second issues: if you agree to allow Al to cop a feel (bad but better than feel a cop) in exchange for the photo, then it is ok. If you do not ask permission, then it is not ok. (IMHO, this would be a great SNL skit). A colleague heard this, and reported me to HR, who told me to be careful.

Was that joke out of line?

I think that joke is so juvenile Roy Moore wants to date it.

I think you need to take some courses on sexual harassment. I'm surprised your work didn't send you automatically. Do you still have playboy calendars in your cubicle too?

How is it 2017 and people still don't know that you don't tell jokes about or talk about sex, race, and/or politics at work?

On one hand, the joke in and of itself was only in bad taste but I didn't find it offensive. But the problem is that we've had to put up with lots and lots of these jokes in the workplace over time, which does affect the working environment in a negative way. Imagine if you had to listen to male colleagues talk like this everyday. So I know you're worried but I don't have a big problem with your colleague reporting you. In fact, I suspect that if they reported you for this that means that this is not the first questionable joke you've told. Consider it a learning experience and move on.

Pardon my dumbness here, but is the joke in question the "it's bad to cop a feel, but better than feeling a cop"?

Why was Helen Keller such a bad driver?

Think more than the joke being offensive, it shows you aren't very smart to be making it right now.

The PC police are everywhere and you just have to deal with it. Almost every joke will offend someone "Did you hear the one about the priest, rabbi and imam......."

I'd like OP to explain the joke, ya know, in intelligible English.

This reminds me of the old Seinfeld bit where the dentist Tim Watley converted to Judaism to tell bad jokes about jews.

Priest: "And these jokes offend you, as a jew?"
Seinfeld: "No, they offend me as a comedian!"

OP: I think your joke was dumb, not offensive.

She was a woman. (Never gets old. Only funny if you are a feminist telling it to a group of women.)

OP, if you're unsure about whether to tell a joke at work, don't.

It's ok to just say good morning at the coffee maker. You don't have to make conversation especially if the only thing you can think of to say is a questionable joke.
