There are objective criteria that teachers are supposed to use in making a determination on what reading level is appropriate. I'm surprised by the difference in the assessments. There's a pretty if difference between a resting level K and a level P.

OP here,

I agree.Dd teacher is a first year teacher and dh wants me to ask on Thursday who performed the benchmark testing on dd.

BTDT in ACPS, ask for the reading specialist to retest your child. It's quite possible that your child's teacher does not how to properly score and administer the test.

OP here,

Thank you.Excellent advice.
This is the moment I become like my mother. She was and always will be our warrior and peacemaker of the PTA.mom was always at school and I thought she worked there.

They have PTAs in East Africa?

OP here,

My dh and I are originally from East Africa. We both value Equal education opportunity for all American kids and Dd was born here.I am looking forward to Thursday conference with dd teacher and hopefully I will learn something to report back.My only concern is how to help dd master her reading gap if that's the case.

I wouldn't believe anything on a midyear MOCO report card. Ask the school.

Also know that it takes a long time to learn to read. Read to your kid at home and don't make it stressful. That's the advice I got from my kid's teacher when he was progressing but still below grade level.

I know! Can you imagine other countries besides America have schools and parents that care about their kids? Shocking.

That made me laugh.

I would ask the teacher more specifics about the reading assessment. Was the child having a hard time decoding the words or was this more a matter of not answering reading comprehension questions correctly.

Sometimes it takes a little practice for a kid to "get" how they are supposed to answer some of those questions.

Ask if there is any practice you can do at home.

The education model in other countries is very different, so it was a genuine question. I've lived in UK commonwealth countries and haven't seen formal PTAs, so I was curious.

Bad Moms was quite the documentary about parenting, schools and PTAs, wasn't it?

Same thing happened to me when I was a kid. My family moved from ACPS to Chantilly (FFCPS) and I went from an advanced reader to reading at a K level when I was in 3rd grade. Parents had me retested and I went up, but only to 1st grade. My mom never agreed with the assessment because I was an early reader and avid reader.

We moved from FFCPS to LCPS when I was in the 5th grade and I again jumped to the advanced status. Was put in the gifted program and bused from the ES to the MS the last few hours of the day to take advanced classes there. Stayed in LCPS for the rest of my academic career on the advanced track. Was selected to test and apply for TJ and was accepted, but chose not to go because of the long hours I'd be on the bus. Graduated from a LCPS and went to an Ivy.
