But Tech doesn't give the percentage of legacies turned away or legacies that were accepted but went somewhere else. When reading the stats. you have to be careful to make sure you don't confuse "admitted" with "accepted). Ther terms are used interchangeably (probably on purpose) here. https://vt.edu/admissions/undergraduate/snapshot.html. College confidential will have actual parents responding to this question.

I had no idea VT was that hard to get into! My son is considering applying, but isn't necessarily that enthusiastic about it--he likes other schools better (and has even already been accepted to one.) Everything I've been reading gave me the impression that VT wasn't that selective.

Sorry, I've confused you. VT has gotten much more difficult to get into, especially in engineering (must have over 4.0) but what I was trying to answer above was the legacy questions. Our of 27,266 applications, only 1,835 LEGACIES actually accepted and showed up. Click on the link above and read and you will understand. I read it quickly but I don't think they gave the figures of the total no. of LEGACIES that were accepted and went elsewhere and the no of LEGACIES that may have been turned down.

Here are those numbers:
Number of freshman applicants: 27,266
Number offered admission: 18,776
Number accepting the offers of admission: 7,075

So, better than 50/50 odds. But of course this isn't broken down. As noted, getting into engineering is pretty hard. Other schools are easier.

No, OP is asking about VT's policy on legacies. I was able to provide only the number of legacies that were accepted and actually showed up. She or he wants a percentage number. The rest is suplurfous for her.

Is this a joke? Va Tech has a 75 percent acceptance rate?

The admissions materials state that the university gives preferential treatment to children of VT alums.

However, this preference only goes to those candidates who will pledge that after they graduate they will move to Loudon and drive around with VT pennants and bumper stickers for the remainder of their lives.

No, it doesn't and anyhow you can't compare acceptance rates of any state school to acceptance rates of private colleges or private universities. The students who apply to UVA, W&M, and UVA all self-select and the public high schools route the best students to the best VA school they think suitable. So a better measure for how difficult it is to get in is to compare your child's GPA and test scores to the Average median 50% of scores at Tecj. Here they are: https://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg01_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=1568. All three institutions have kids coming in with very high test scores and high gpa. A good rule of thumb is that it makes no sense if you are not in the top 10% of your class, say for UVA. because 93.6% acceptances last year were top ten percent of the class. Average GPA is now 4.43, act average 50% median is 31-35. Tech's are a bit lower but for engineering where most successful applicants had 4.0 or higher when they applied.

Agreed. Overall acceptance rates, particularly for popular in-state schools, is almost meaningless. You need to look at acceptance rates for your DC's school which are available on Naviance. What you don't have visibility into and is probably more important is the acceptance rates for a particular major. VA Tech's acceptance rate for my DC's NVa public HS have hovered around 60% for the last 3 years. The median GPA was 4.03 (weighted) and SAT/ACT are 1330/29 last year. The stats for Engineering and out-of state are presumably higher. By comparison, the medians for UVa and W&M are about a .2 - .3 higher GPA and 100+ points on the SAT. Tech is much larger and as a large land grant university should be accepting way more kids.

VT Admissions data (charts do allow you to view numbers by major)
https://irweb.ir.vt.edu/webtest/admission_data.aspx

Admissions rate overall is right at 70%.

Agriculture 75%
Architecture 71%
Business 67%
Engineering 72%
Liberal Arts 63%
Natural Resources 74%

Thanks. This is 8:34 from above. This is well known for anyone who is well-read in the industry or reads College Confidential. But when I post this here I sometimes get slammed. The accepted figures from public state universities cannot be compared to those other private institutions Instead you have to look at the grades, scores and high school placement to get a feel for whether or not you think you have a chance and then apply. And yes, Engineering department says 4.0 or higher for engineering. They also like to see calculus AB finished before application (with an A).

OP- call the admissions and ask them your question. Tell them you know (figure I supplied above) how many legacies get in but you want to know percentage from all the applications.
For what it's worth, Ivies take @ 30% of legacies and those that they take have parents who have pledged seven figures, or athletes or URMs.
