| What is Newark like now? The one time I passed through years ago I seem to remember it being gritty and rundown. Has it caught up as a university town? |
Attended Delaware 25 years ago and get back semi-regularly since I have family there and I would never have characterized the town as gritty. It certainly has some areas with what could fairly be called rundown student housing though far less of it than when I was there as a lot of new housing has been built. There is a legit local economy - it is essentially a far flung Philly suburb and there are some manufacturing jobs around or at least there used to be though the local GM plant closed a few years ago and Dupont has also laid off a lot of people so there used to be some tensions between more working class locals and the more clueless/elitist University crowd. It is a really cute and walkable town with a traditional Main Street on the edge of campus though the University has bought up much of the property on main street and the mix of businesses are far less interesting than they used to be. There is also a nice state park right on the edge of campus. |
