How much cash do you keep in the home?

I'm intrigued. I've thought about purchasing gold, in case we get to a point where currency is pointless. What made you decide to purchase them? Where did you purchase the gold coins? How much is each gold coin worth? How do you envision yourself using them?

15:20 who keeps $2K in the safe -- our HHI is $250K and we have a lot in liquid savings. I agree it isn't necessarily related to income.

$2000 in a safe for emergencies. You never know when the banking systems will be down for outages or due to hacking.

omg, less than $20! same with my wallet, less than $20.
Don't even have much hi tech gadgets. our laptop is more than 4 years. Echo is our only 'hi-tech' gadget at home.
Our smart tv is more than 2 years old and it doesn't even work right!!

Couple thousand bucks for life's little emergencies. Over the years, that has included things like a last minute casino trip, a used car purchase on a Sunday, paying some fly by night tree guys to clean up our yard after the derecho, etc.

This really isn't an Armageddon issue. Credit card readers require electricity. Derecho, anyone?

If you can afford it, it's a good idea to keep a week to ten days worth of incidental expenses in cash at home.

$2k in a safe (this seems to be common...who knew?). I like to keep ~$40 in my wallet at all times in case I'm somewhere that doesn't take credit cards or the machine is broken. DH does the same. We probably have another $100 or so around if you added up in our change jar, random money in our desks, etc.

We keep a few hundred dollars. I have a second job that I work some evenings and weekends. I usually get paid in cash for this job. Around $150 that get 2-3 times per month. (this isn't under the table as I get a 1099 every year for this work). We pay our housecleaning service in cash every month, so we use this cash for that and for pocket cash to have. We both keep between $15-50 on us at any time and we use small amounts, so may $10-15 a week between us? We restock from this supply.

The place I usually get my breakfast has a $5 minimum for CC, Since my normal breakfast is about $3, I usually pay in cash. I go there 2-3 times a week.

We usually have $10-$15k in cash at the house at any given time. The most we had was $50k but that made me nervous.

When we lived in California, we were told to be prepared for a week to ten days without electricity and water in case of a big earthquake. So you should keep enough cash in small bill in the house to cover that amount of time. You should also keep some extra hidden in the glove box of your car in case something happens when you're out.

Earthquakes occur without any warning, so it's good to be prepared. Even in a place without the threat of earthquakes, it's good to be prepared in case of any kind of an emergency.

Threads like this make me want to be a prepper. Or at least not what I am which is the opposite of prepper.

We probably have 5-8k in the house right now, but more typical is $1-2k.
