Recommend charities where a little money really helps

Small charities! Typically don't make things like the Catalog for Philanthropy (which then get tons of gifts because people read them). Any small nonprofit -- $1MM or less, your gift will make a huge difference!

I work at a nonprofit with $1 MM revenue and we would dearly love another $3K donor -- that is major donor territory for us!

What charity do you work for?

OP, talk a little more about your values and passions. Do you want to make a difference for people here at home, or internationally? Is lifting people out of poverty most important to you, or are there health & wellness issues you'd like support? Or are you more concerned about animal welfare? Or furthering the arts? So many ways to do good.

Why doesn’t Charity Water need donations?

I don't think 3 to 5k is a small amount! But look at local food pantries and teen shelters who can really use every dollar, or Project Night Night where you can see that your donation buys x gifts to homeless kids.

Traveling Players Ensemble -- a small non-profit theater program for kids in DC/MD/VA. $3,000 to $5,000 would make a major difference and you would be invited to the annual brunch for Ensemble Level Donors with the founder of TPE.

23:12 posting again -- forgot to say that TPE is in the Catalog for Philanthropy.

I agree to look for a small, local charity or non-profit. My huge non-profit is mostly funded by USG grants. I wouldn't donate my $$ to them, even though they do good work. My relative works for a local film festival though (501c3) and I've seen what they do on a shoe string budget, so I would probably give to them, or some other charity that does music education outreach, or maybe the DC diaper bank. Good luck!

I don't want to identify myself on DCUM...there are only ten or so of us! But we are a small environmental group, not one of the biggies (NRDC, EDF, WWF...they don't need the small gifts).

I give money to an orphanage in Bolivia. There's almost no overhead. $250 can fund a staff person to take care of little babies.

They just give money to extremely poor people in Africa. The people use if for their greatest need: Adding a roof to their house, buying livestock, investing in a sewing machine, paying school bills, and so on.

Many recipients explain what they used it for here: https://live.givedirectly.org/

A long article here:

My mother has been giving through Kiva for years. It's micro loans. She gives, gets paid back, and gives again.
