| OP here -- this is helpful, but I'd really like to know how much these options are costing everyone. I'm going to research the Tivo Romio that a PP mentioned because it would be nice to record shows over the antenna and watch them after the kids go to sleep. |
| Hulu now offers live tv. I believe with commercials is $39.95. I've been thinking about getting that, I have regular Hulu now. |
| If you like watching channels, cutting the cord isn't good for you. We like watching shows so we really enjoy netflix. We don't watch the news or sports or just browse channels. |

OP, later tonight when I'm on my home computer I can give you a price and channel breakdown of everything I have.
The biggest plus for me is that all of my options are month to month. I never have to worry about additional fees if I want to cancel. I had a Starz subscription for a while via Hulu, and when I wasn't using it as much, I dropped it. No muss no fuss. If I wanted to do that with Comcast, they would have made a big deal of it. |
| My pricing issue is that when you "unbundle" (we have Verizon) it is not really that much of savings at all. If I'm cutting the cord, it better be for more than $20/month. |
But if you unbundle are you getting rid of everything except your WiFi? That's what I'm doing. Getting rid of TV package and landline/voicemail package. Only keeping my WiFi with Verizon. |

I cut the cord back in 2011. I moved at the beginning of this year, so I got Comcast's promo of $29.99 a month for 25mbps. Prior to that, I paid $49.99 for RCN's 50mbps plan. Both prices include tax. I bought my own modem-router combo for $150 at Best Buy, so no rental fee.
Netflix's selection is 95% outdated, but for $9 it keeps my daughter happy, and it gives me that random feeling you get when you scroll through channels and see old movies/shows on cable. I have Hulu for more recent shows. I pay $11 for the commercial free version, so it's on par with a DVR in my opinion. It's missing some things (local news, sports, CBS). I don't miss them though. Once a year, I subscribe to HBO Now $15 for a month or two so that I can binge watch the most recent season of Game of Thrones, Newsroom, Westworld, or whatever the popular show is at the time. For any new movies, I just go to Redbox. I did the free trial of YouTube TV last month. It wasn't worth it. Too many commercials for $35. It was like watching regular TV with 2 minute commercials throughout the show. |
See, that's the issue I had with Verizon. When I tried to unbundle, the price for just Fios went up to something like $79/month (service + equipment). So then add on the $39.99 for Hulu live, $9.99 for Netflix, toss in some on that Amazon Prime subscription, and $25 for Sling... and we're pretty much equal to the price I'm paying now for Verizon Fios and Netflix (and Amazon Prime, which I don't use as often). |
| We get Nats games with MLB Extra Innings app, and we get Sunday Ticket for NFL games. Antenna works for any games broadcast on NBC, ABC, CBS or Fox. |
How much would you save if you bought your own router vs renting from verizon? My plan is to have just fios, directTVNow ($35/mo), amazon prime ($99/yr), and netflix ($10/month). I'm still coming out on top. Right now my bundle with verizon costs me $200/month so I'm expecting to save almost $100/month. Also what's the difference between sling and Hulu live.. do you need both? |
How much do you pay for this sports access? What antenna do you have ? |
|
I have a Roku connected to my TV
Comcast internet: best/strongest internet for $82.66 after taxes and fees. CBS all access $5.99 Hulu $5.99 (ABC, Fox, NBC) Netflix $9.99 Sling Blue $24.99 Amazon Prime Cable/Internet/Phone from Comcast was close to $200, so I'm saving quite a bit. I didn't want the phone and never even plugged one in, but it was the only way to get the deal at the time. |
We have the same. On another thread on DCUM, someone directed me to this page - I followed it almost exactly and love the set up. We get all the sports and network shows now completely free and can record and watch from any TV. https://www.mrfinancialindependence.com/2017/11/02/cutting-the-cord-saying-goodbye-to-your-cable-bill-without-losing-tv/ |
We just look on YouTube -- clips from the news channels turn up there daily if you want those. I watch a lot of news and still don't have cable to do so. OP, we have broadcast TV via antenna, plus Roku which we use mostly to stream our Netflix and see YouTube on the TV. Don't even have Amazon. We're happy with what we have. I know a lot of people who have our setup but add Amazon. |
