I also love the usual suspects mentioned in this thread but if I think back to all-time, must-watch, social event TV:

My So-Called Life (the fact that I will never know what happened beyond that last episode with Brian Krakow standing there with his stupid bike while Angela rides off in Jordan's car thinking he's the one who wrote that letter...life has gone on but part of me is still sitting in that car too. And watching that show now - good God, it's annoying as hell.)
