Banneker or SWW from Deal

Anonymous
I graduated from Banneker.

I posted a long summary of my experience on this thread:

I didn't come from Deal, but I can confidently say that no one "likes" Banneker while they're there for the same reason that most teenagers hate their parents and their "stupid rules." Most of us appreciated finding refuge from the chronic behavior and academic problems from our neighborhood schools. That wouldn't really be a novelty to a student coming from Deal and any WOTP elementary schools. The main thing that most of the (black) Deal kids seemed to appreciate was being in a school where the majority of the kids looked like them. Outside of that, we all hated the nonstop work. You can read the post I linked for how that hate shifts to appreciation in college.

In my honest opinion, I think SWW is more of a natural continuation of the status quo that your run of the mill WOTP 8th grader has come to expect. My daughter is in an elementary school WOTP. Up until recently, I planned to send her to SWW after Deal. Lately, however, she's been saying that she doesn't like that she's "different" and either wants to turn white or go to a school with kids who look like her. We may end up sending her to Banneker to bombard her with cultural representation and identity before she goes off into the world (assuming the demographics don't shift completely by then).
