My car was totaled. I'm thinking of just using zipcar from now on.

We live 2 blocks from a giant, 7 minutes from a metro section, and on a major artery (so there's a bus stop on our door step, at rush hour buses every 4 min, 10 min otherwise and 12-15 on the weekend). It's fine. We get a zipcar as needed and we rent for the weekend or more from DCA. OP add up your car expenses: monthly payment, maintenance, insurance, parking, gas etc. If you only drove 2,000 miles last year, I doubt it's worth it.

OP here. Thanks. I live RIGHT in the city. 1 block from Giant. Maybe the same one as you! (Cathedral Heights). Like you, I can walk 1 block to the buses that go downtown every 4-5 minutes. I haven't driven to work in 3 years. How does zipcar work? Do you have to reserve a day in advance? Not that it really matters. Honestly, if I need to get somewhere with no notice of course I can uber.

So let's see how it goes.

You can reserve in advance, e.g. You have a dr appt or something, normally the earlier the better. It can be hard to get a car at popular times but I've not had a problem. I'm the fellow city dweller, in Mount Pleasant tho...there's a handy iPhone app.

Why do you even need Costco? You should def ditch the car.

Oh and umm the MtP PP...no car made easier through Amazon subscribe and save: diapers, wipes, formula, baby food, TP, paper towels, shampoo, laundry detergent, toothpaste, sunscreen, basically, whatever we can get delivered, gets delivered.

I live in the city and I didn't own a car from 2012-2016. I used Zipcar and Uber when I needed to, and of course the metro and buses. The only time I ever had trouble getting a Zipcar was on Thanksgiving. There were otherwise always tons of cars available when I needed them, even with little notice. I lived down the street from a grocery store so that was never an issue (even now, I own a car but always walk to the grocery store).

I bought a car when Safetrack started in 2016, because my bus-to-metro commute between my DC neighborhood and Arlington was wearing on me. I also was increasingly needing to drive to Central VA for work, which became a bigger pain in the ass when I needed a rental to do it.

If you only drive 2000 miles a year, you'll save a lot of money without the car.

Definitely!

You might need a car when Baby comes along, so take the opportunity now to live without car-ownership!
