Can I volunteer in my neighborhood elementary school without my kids attending it?

We have had "community coaches" who aren't parents volunteer for Girls on the Run. Totally not creepy and completely awesome that adults not affiliated with the school would want to help. I think the naysayers on this thread have serious attitude problems.

+1

Why? It's good for property values, ES-age kids are generally fun - why is it strange?

Her kids don't even go to the school. Why volunteer at her neighborhood school that isn't good enough for her special snowflakes to attend?

Maybe some people aren't as self-absorbed as others who post here?

I wouldn't listen to the naysayers here. Call the school and ask if they could use your help.

I do think you should expect some degree of confusion or negativity from school staff. They try hard to "improve" the school every day, but the school isn't good enough for your children, and though you are not an educator you feel you can improve it.

Maybe OPs kids are older or have special needs and go to another school.
I volunteered at an MCPS school after my son left and they seemed glad to have the help.

Are you dedicating some time to the unwashed masses?

What gives, OP?

Even so, it's very weird to volunteer at your neighborhood school that your own kids do not attend. Maybe as a grandma when your kids are grown. It is ODD otherwise. FWIW, my kids do not go the neighborhood school. I volunteer at the school they actually attend. The OP could just as well volunteer at the public library (less creepy IMO).

OP here. Thank you! I was trying to deliberately omit personal details. Some of your assumption is correct.

But your son attended the school at some point. OP said her will not be attending.

Maybe Op recently moved to the area and her kids are in high school or college and she has free time during the day. One of my great aunts volunteered at her neighborhood school after her kids were grown. Op, call the principal and offer your services. I'm sure the school will be happy to have you.

People like you, who are so suspicious of everyone and think only you have all the answers, are the root of many of the problems that our communities have now.

You just need to call the front office, OP. I don't think it's creepy!

Why would it be weird?

We are at a fOCUS school in MCPS and they let people volunteer. We have a retired teacher who runs a reading program for the younger kids. It's a great idea!

+100!

If they won't let you work with kids, I bet you could volunteer at the school library.

Not creepy. It's nice to make a contribution to the community like this. Call the school, OP!
