I swear my older brother may have one of the largest 401ks in county.
He graduated college and got a great job off bat in 1982. He has always worked for a company with a 401k and nearly whole career he had 100 percent match on first five percent. He has done the max every year since 1982 and been 100 percent equities. 35 years max contribution. In financial crisis his 401k could move six figures up and down. Given 401ks only started late 70s and he managed to do max 35 years in a row all equites his 401k is massive. |
| I contribute about $12,000 a year. Have two kids in daycare, will increase to the max once one is out (next year). |
How much is in it? |
Sorry,I'm 32. |
|
started at 5%. raised it to 10% as I kept getting raises.
started maxing out around age 35 |
| I'm 32. This will be my first year maxing out. Prior to that, I contributed about 10% My youngest is in his last year of daycare/nanny years which has freed up some income. |
| 34, max out. |
| H is 40 and has maxed out since 32. I am 37 and started maxing out 2 years ago. |
| 37. Max out to 18k. Have done so since I graduated law school - except the 18 months I wasn't working. |
| 35 and I put in the max. I also put a lot into a 529 plan for my two year old. I'm hoping that by doing so her college will be paid for by age 12 or so. We also save a fair amount outside the 401k and 529 but retirement and college are our #1 priorities for the time being. |
+1. My financial planner said 10% is the magic number. As long as you're at 10% total between your and employer's contributions, you're in good shape. |

33 - Max it out, which is about 15% of my pay + some match
