Do you need a mattress for a Pack n' Play if you are using it for sleeping?

After your child weighs more than 20 lbs or so, the thin cardboard mattress does not lend itself to a good night of sleep. So yes, we bought a mattress to use with it.

One night of my 1 year old waking up hourly convinced me of this. It's not more unsafe with a toddler than many other sleeping arrangements people use for them. Including bed sharing.

For travel especially, just use the one it comes with, and get a thick, quilted fitted sheet.

Do not add a mattress. It is a safety risk to your baby. Use what comes with it, even if it seems "hard."
