What Do I Do With This Cat?

Anonymous
Find no-kill shelter.

Call, email, AND text friend: "I am dropping Cat off at X name no-kill shelter at (time today). You can contact them to retrieve your cat if you'd like."

If cat is still valuable to friend, she'll contact you before that time.

If not, proceed to drop off cat at no-kill shelter. Tell them the cat was abandoned.

Yup this. You could try giving her 24 hours notice that you'll be doing this. And tell her that if you hear nothing back you will take that as notice she has officially abandoned the cat.

That's not how no kill shelters work. You don't just show up with a cat and they take it. Most of the shelters you think of as no kill are what's known as limited admissions - meaning they don't take every cat that needs a new home. You have to call and see if they will take the cat - and if you are honest about the situation, that further reduces the chances of them taking the cat.

OP: You really need to find another foster home for this cat, while you figure out what is going on. Call on your whole network. Ask your friends to ask their friends. Find someone who can even step in for a few weeks, while you keep trying to reach your friend and/or find a more permanent solution.

If you have to take this cat to the shelter, you have a right to do so. She has already abandoned the cat to you. She wouldn't find a lawyer in his or her right mind to sue you, so that's not a valid concern.

If your living situation is at risk because you are not allowed to have pets, you do not need to take heroic measures to find the cat a home.

I've tried this, no one wants to take on this cat. I am terrified I am going to get kicked out, and I am also really sad that my only option is a shelter.

It's your friend that's put you in this terrible position. I'm sorry you're in it, but you need to take the cat to the shelter.

Does she have a Facebook account? Post on her home page (and make sure she is tagged so her entire network can see the post) - that she has abandoned her cat and is unreachable/has disappeared...maybe someone in her network can take the cat, or reach her. Who gives a F is she is publicly shamed, her behavior is atrocious.

Your "friend" is a selfish + inconsiderate person.

I would seriously re-evaluate her as a friend since friends do not do what she did to you.
Plus I could never be friends w/a person who was so callous & heartless to an animal.

Try to re-home the cat first.
Spread the word that you have a cat you would like to re-Home.

If you cannot find a loving home for it, then your last resort would be to find a no-kill rescue or shelter to take it.

Good luck.

Trust me, we are no longer friends at this point.

I've tried rehoming the cat, no takers.

The cat has to go this week and I am running out of options so it may be a shelter at this point. Kill or no kill, I dont have too many options.

Have you tried your neighborhood listserv?

Have you tried looking for someplace that can board the cat while you try to find another home?

Have you tried to pay a rescue group to find a foster home for the cat?

Have you asked your whole Facebook friend list if they can take the cat?

Have you tried calling your friend's mother, or reaching out to other people who know her?

Why don't you try posting the cat here on DCUM and seeing if someone can help you?

Are you being as resourceful as you possibly can be before you bring this cat to a shelter where - let's be frank - it is entirely likely she is going to be euthanized for space?

Do you know what vet this cat goes to? If you tell them the situation, they may board/foster the cat and help find it a new home. Especially if it's lovable and this adoptable. Any way to find out which vet she used??

And if you can't find a vet, call around to different vets - one may take the cat in.

That's a good idea. You can also ask at the vets' offices if you can put up a notice saying the cat needs a home. Or someone who works at the vets' offices might be willing to foster/adopt the cat.

Also reach out to rescues and ask if they will put up courtesy posts on Facebook saying that the cat needs out immediately.

Another option that you can try is reaching out to your local newspapers and TV stations - a sad story about a cat whose owner abandoned her, and who needs a new home immediately, might work for one of them. There's a clear action statement there - a clear way for people to help. You probably don't want to embarrass your friend - but embarrassing her is better than killing her cat, right?
