NPR has covered this for months. Turn off FOX for a while and your world will open up.

A search for "Venezuela" and "Maduro" yields 100+ NPR reports in the past 12 months.

--On August 14, 2016, NPR's All Things Considered reported: "Amid Economic Crisis, Venezuelans Try To Find Food In Colombia"

--On August 31, 2016: "Ahead Of Major Protest, Venezuela Kicked Me (And Other Journalists) Out"

Going back further and searching for all dates, NPR has 283 reports on its website that match the search terms "Venezuela" and "Maduro." A sampling:

--All Things Considered reported on December 8, 2015: "Venezuela's University Professors Vote With Their Feet: The collapse of the economy, combined with sky-high inflation, has left university professors earning about $35 a month. Droves of professionals have left, seeking opportunities abroad."

--On May 5, 2014: "In Venezuela Protests, Report Condemns Police's 'Pattern Of Abuse'"

--On January 17, 2014: "A Newsprint Shortage Hobbles Venezuelan Media: Venezuela is running out of newsprint and newspapers are shutting down. Media outlets say that it's another form of harassment by a government that often doesn't like what independent media reports."

Searching NPR for "Venezuela" and "Chavez" yields 707 reports, including plenty that document the declining fortunes of Venezuela under Chavez. A sampling:

--August 2, 2010: "In Venezuela, Rise Of Labor Unions Turns Deadly: President Hugo Chavez calls his country a workers' paradise. But trade union activists are being murdered at an alarming rate in Venezuela, making it one of the world's most dangerous countries for union organizers."

--October 14, 2009: "Golf In Cross Hairs Of Venezuela's President: Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez has ordered the nationalization of the oil industry, steel and cement companies — even coffee roasters. Now, he could be taking aim at golf. He dismissed the sport as elitist this summer and has taken steps that could lead to the takeover of two courses. Some golfers are bracing for more."

--October 6, 2009: "Critics Say Chavez Targeting Opponents For Arrest: In Venezuela, dozens of key government opponents have been jailed in recent months. The government says they are dangerous adversaries who foment violence. But human rights groups and others say President Hugo Chavez is singling out foes in politically motivated witch hunts."

--June 25, 2009: "Opinion: National Review Online: Thuggery 101: In these first six months, the new administration has made clear to Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Venezuela's Hugo Chávez, Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega, Russia's Vladimir Putin, and other strongmen like them that Barack Obama is not a mean-talking George Bush. But so far the world's thugs do not seem to appreciate that new goodwill."

Turning to that other bastion of liberalism, the Washington Post: 288 articles on "Venezuela + Maduro" in the past 12 months.

Looks like the MSM has been covering this pretty thoroughly, and critically, for quite some time.

I have heard it / seen it. I'm a np and I'm not doubting the coverage as much as pp.

However....
The quantity of articles is not always indicative of coverage. You must also ask, 'how many headlines" and "what prominence are the headlines getting."

I know huff po has articles on the tpp going waaay back because I was searching them out. But, it was rare to see it on their homepage. (This was back when Warren et al were opposing BO on the subject. And surprisingly McConnell et al were creating it with him).

Well, I can say with absolute certainty that the Venezuela articles in the Washington Post are almost always printed in the A section, because that's where the international news is printed. I don't know how often they have been on the front page. The NPR stories on-line are usually directly from the radio programs, so in that medium they get just as much prominence as anything else NPR reports on (other than what leads the news at the top of the hour).

A search of "Venezuela + Chavez" on Fox News turns up 26 articles; "Venezuela + Maduro" turns up 34 reports. I don't care how prominent they were on the Fox website or Fox news, they devote only a small fraction of the air/ink that NPR and WaPo do to this issue. So I don't think it's accurate to say the MSM hasn't been reporting on this, or to imply that the "liberal" media hasn't been covering this but the "conservative" media has. YMMV.

The US has been hands off on this issue because it has ceded the oil reserves to Rosenft.

Fucking traitors.

And now Trump is blustering about military action in Venezuela.

We know that is a load of crap.

Polls are starting to look really bad for Obama. Looks like he'll have to start a war or major conflict to win. Don't put it past him!

Terrible crisis. Just goes to show what happens when you vote an authoritarian crack pot as your president. Strongmen who cultivate cults of personality are never ideal leaders and populism is often the first step on the road away from democracy toward authoritarianism.

Amen!

I've heard lots of stories about Venezuela on NPR. I watch Fox occasionally and look at their news blurbs on trending news on my phone and I have never seen anything about Venezuela. I can't say that they don't cover it, but it's not on the front burner for them.

Waitiing for Trump to thank Maduro for helping him institute a cost savings measure.

Where is Sean Penn on this?

I don't think we've been ignoring Latin American issues. We are paying attention to the issues that affect us. For Latin America this is immigration. We cover the Middle East also in so far as the issues that affect us, namely terrorism.

We have 3 radios in our home, all on NPR. Neither Latin American issues nor terrorism is their focus. Rather, their programs and interviews frequently emphasize the concerns of Middle Eastern individuals and families.
