Wow, PP, we own several properties (no, that is not where all our money is invested) and thought breaking it down might be helpful. Silly me. Glad you know it all. You must be really successful, since you are all knowing. And you're not even the slightest bit judgmental (sarcasm), so you must be really happy and have tons of friends. NOT. OP, enjoy your beach house in good health. Try not to invite PP - she's a killjoy! ROFLMAO! I've already mentioned some factors regarding renting that deter the "less thans". But I see reading isn't PP's strong point. Nor people skills. I highly doubt PP has been to certain areas of which I speak. Don't be afraid to chime in with more questions. I especially hope PP does. Sigh. Why can't I be her? No thanks. |

"ilk" - now THAT's a "snifflier than thou" word. Just what message do you think she was sniffling, is my question? BWHAHAHAHA..... |
Do you still say "cool beans"? |

My parents and my aunt and uncle both own houses in Rehoboth and both go every weekend from DC, so distance isn't am issue in my mind. We go for three or four weeks a year and sometimes I go without my husband, but invite a fellow mom to keep me company.
The bigger issue for me would be whether we'd use it as the kids get older weekends seem to get filled fast. I'd hate for them to miss out on birthday parties and such. Also, we started religious school and that takes all Sunday morning. So that is a consideration. As for renting it, my parents did it for one summer and decided that the cons outweighed the pros. My aunt and uncle did some renting out the first couple of years ( to defray mortgagae I guess) and now not at all/. I agree that for Rehoboth regulars, the dead of summer is the least desirable time. I love summers there but it is much more relaxing and peaceful in September and at the holidays. We love it there though and so do our kids. We leave at 7 pm on Friday and never hit traffic. Sunday we leave at around 4-5 or maybe even 6 and again...only once or twice in 10 years have we sat in traffic. Really. |
| We have a beach house in Massachusetts. This summer we will be here for about 7 weeks (not consecutive). We have flexible jobs so are able to work from here. Because it is a long drive (which we will have done 3 times this summer) it isn't really a place we use on weekends other than Memorial Day and Thanksgiving and the occasional visit in the off season. It has been great and the upkeep isn't that challenging (or at least we dont mind doing it). We have pretty good support systems in place to help watch and maintain the house in the off season so we really don't have to worry too much about it. |

"Do you still say "cool beans"?"
Boy is this person pissed they don't own a beach house (and clearly don't get invited to any) or what? |
|
OP - let us know what you think about people who have chimed in with actual experience. We are excited for you! |
|
Massachusetts! Jealous! We go every year and there are TONS of MD/VA/DC plates! Guess they have figured out OBX SUX! LOL! The people are so nice there. They don't just rudely stare like some hick. |
Who are you calling hick? You sound like trash. |
|
Most people who stare without provocation, likely. Nope, last time I checked I was not trash. You? |
|
Staring seems distinct to certain areas, but not New England. "When in Rome!" Staring does seem a trashy thing to do. |
We also own a beach house in MA, and I spend about 5-6 weeks up there in the summer with the children, and my husband comes usually twice during that time. I do work, but my job is very flexible and I can do it from just about anywhere, so why not do it late at night after a great day at the beach? We also go for a week at Christmas. If we lived closer, then I think we would probably go for some time in Oct (prettiest time of the year) and April or May.
I agree with others, though, that if it were the kind of place where I could get to more easily, I might not invest the kind of extended time I do in going, and then it could end up a pain to go back and forth. My sister, who lives in Boston and could get to our beach house in under 2 hours, goes more frequently but for much less total time than I do. And she doesn't go nearly as often as I think we would go, but I am sure if we were in her shoes, then I would find it the hassle to go that she does (as another PP mentioned, it really is a pain to pack on a fri morning and then rush out straight from work). Good luck with your decision. |

Sigh, this is making me miss having been born and raised an hour from the beach! 8) |
