The chocolate on chocolate is a bit too heavy, unless you have real chocolate enthusiasts.[/quote

+1 love white/vanilla with vanilla frosting. Light and simple.

Me too. I love the white/vanilla and find the chocolate a bit too much.

Everyone raved about the Costco chocolate sheet cake we had at our last kid birthday. Several people asked me where I got it. And I have to say, it was surprisingly moist. Not the usual dry supermarket crap.

Another vote for Costco. Delicious and cheap.

+1. One relative said it was one of the best cakes he'd ever had!

I stand corrected on the costco sheet cake, and it came from someone that raves about costco. Maybe she got a dud.

But they should be.

No, PP is right. Whipped cream frosting is gross. Whipped cream is fine on strawberry shortcake or some such but not for birthday cake.

Costco or Safeway.

OP here. Thanks! I'm not a member, but maybe I can find one to take me with them for the cake. I'm a hater on the whipped cream frosting, too. I like the shortening/sugar stuff

If not a member of Costco - go to Safeway. I have had their sheet cakes for events and people have enjoyed them.

I think Giant's are not as good.

I thought the HT cake was gross, though my husband and son liked it.

Costco cakes are good. And they last forever. I've told this story before but my grandmother buys a huge sheet cake from there for family reunions and then stores the leftovers in her basement freezer for months, bringing them out for every subsequent family event. One year we went to visit in March and that Thanksgiving, she drove East with the rest of the cake. It's become a family joke. But they really are good cakes and they do last well in the freezer! (Which is probably an indictment of what's in them but ... whatever.)
