3.1 GPA, 32 ACT; any schools matching in-state VA tuition/COA?

DC had a 34 on first try and retook to get a perfect 36, but had already been contacted by two colleges out of the blue to offer $28,000 scholarships. What these small LACs wanted was his top ACT score - at first they said "Because you have scored over 32 . . . " and when we corrected them (they had purchased the list of men who had taken the test and scored over 32) they upped the ante. They will also waive the application fee, etc. The problem is, even with a $28,000 merit scholarship, the two institutions (which I doubt you have heard of) were still more expensive than in-state, so he went to UVA. You are smart to start so early, and yes, make College Confidential your home.

My DC had a 3.3 UW GPA and a 34 ACT. He got large merit offers from Juniata, Allegheny, and Ohio Wesleyan, all great schools IMO.

OP, if you think your DC would do better in a SLAC environment, consider Colleges That Change Lives schools.

My 3.5/33 ACT kid got nice merit ($20-$25K/year) from lots of private schools. It just wasn't enough merit to make them affordable to us.

Unfortunately, the 3.5ish GPA could come back to bite him with the more competitive state schools.

Thank you for the Colleges That Change Lives recommendation. The size of UVA/VA Tech scares me a bit.
