Yeah, I felt really conflicted about that. She never had a chance. And that scene where she was talking to her dad, telling him that she didn't blame him. I was thinking to myself that's she more gracious than me because I do think he holds a lot of responsibility for not protecting and being present.

Huh. I didn't think that 10 years with the possibility of parole at 8 years was that bad for pre-meditated murder.

I was skeptical about the conversation she had with her father since I do think it's a possibility she's been trained to be a master manipulator.

How has she been trained to be a master manipulator?

She's been force fed mind altering drugs for twenty years.

She lost all her teeth

She had a feeding tube implanted in her abdomen without cause.

Her head was kept shaved.

This woman was basically medically experimented on. She couldn't leave, she couldn't call the police because her mother had the option of explaining away anything the daughter said as the daughter being "retarded" or "crazy." I can't imagine what locking up the daughter does -- she's not going to kill again.

I agree with you, but I think she may turn out to be a manipulator herself only because she's had no other example.

This was incredibly disturbing and while I hope for the best I think it would be highly unlikely for poor Gypsy to ever recover from this - tragic.

To the PP who wanted true crime podcasts, Sword & Scale is my favorite.

They definitely needed to go into the mother's mental state more and be more investigative about what she was doing when she was alive. Maybe I am too obsessed with true crime podcats, but there is a lot more material there!

I was really looking forward to this, and was disappointed. HBO has been on our chopping block, but we decided to go another month in part because of this doc. It was too short, considering the material, and I really wanted to hear more about the deception and probable munchausen, rather than the play by play of the murder. It seemed like they missed the interesting plot point. They should have made a doc about a woman who abused her daughter by faking illnesses, etc and did so for so long and so severely that the daughter eventually murdered her. Instead the movie was about the murder of a woman who happened to have done that stuff. Missed the mark, imo.

Here's the crazy thing: I was born in '76. In 1978 or 1979, I broke my leg at home. My mother told me (years later) that doctors had JUST started screening for child abuse and when she brought me to the doctor (whose office was in a hospital) she was separated from me while they talked to me. She was standing just outside the exam room and the door was open, but I couldn't see her. She said they asked me how I hurt my leg, who was in the house when it happened, specifically where my mom was, what my mom did when I cried, what else we did before we came to the doctor.

That was almost FORTY YEARS ago. So how the hell were these doctors not separating the mother and running tests (both physical and psychological). My mom is a psychologist and could talk a good medical game if she had to/wanted to.

Looks like you can sign up for a free month trial of HBO Now and get access. Just remember to cancel before the next month's charge: https://order.hbonow.com/

I watched it on the Kodi app with an Amazon firestick.

I agree it was a flawed documentary. I actually think the abuse she suffered was worse than portrayed - a focus on what it's like to live in an unreality from birth on would have been interesting.

I am very torn on the murder charge. It was premeditated murder, I suppose i can agree to that. And the DA was god to lower the charges. But to be honest I think something more like 3-5 years would be more appropriate, and manslaughter rather than murder.
