It is PP that said all of these schools were majority AA. Not sure what she's trying to show. |
| Most interesting to me was just how far ahead SWW is (on this list) than the others. Not only #1 in DC, but #84 in the country?!?! Wow! I don't have a child in HS yet, and knew SWW was good in DC, but I had no idea just how good. |
I think there's an error in the data. US news gives heavier weight to schools with a high enrollment of students qualifying for FARMS. It has SWW as 99% FARMS. DCPS says it's 15%. http://profiles.dcps.dc.gov/School+Without+Walls+High+School |
Yes but it's worth noting this school is self- selective: 3.0 GPA, testing, individual and family interview JUST TO BE CONSIDERED! Then you get in if your lottery number gets pulled. In other words, these kids are already built to succeed. I would absolutely expect them to make this list. |

n.b. I don't live in DC. However I periodically blog surf trying to understand MCPS and its problems. I thought of this thread when I read this post on why Basis AZ scored so well and don't see the information elsewhere in the thread. https://deutsch29.wordpress.com/2017/04/30/which-is-higher-at-basis-schools-its-ap-scores-or-its-debt/ Yes, the blogger likes drama and I'm not sure how much of it is worthy of real concern but there are links to the actual tax data referenced at the bottom of the post. (I tend to give more credibility to writers that post source links.) |
| TJ seems to be slipping. |
Not really. It's curriculum isn't AP heavy (rather than offering an AP science TJ offers its won, harder class) and that hurts its ranking under the US News methodology. |
But that methodology has been essentially the same for years, and IIRC Jay Mathews always managed to plant TJ at the top of his list. Why has TJ's position dropped? |
