What is a fitness activity similar to horseback riding?

Riding a merry go round?

Is there a reason you don't want to work on becoming more athletic?

What are some other types of sports/fitness activities that are similar to that, in the sense that they don't require much athletic ability but is something different and unique? I've never been a gym person. But I would like an activity where I can improve my skills and if it's social that's a bonus. Some ideas I had are:

-yoga
-ballroom dancing

Any other suggestions?

Er, biking? You don't really need much athletic ability to get started, you don't have to go to a gym, you get out in the open air, you get to see nature (or the city, if you prefer), you can keep going to different places (unless you are bike commuting, in which case its mostly the same every day).

I suppose its not unique though. Then yoga isn't either.

You can definitely improve your skills over time, and its quite social, if you want it to be (on line bike forums, group rides at different levels, coffee clubs, volunteer opportunities, etc)

You kidding me right? Chasing horses, hauling hay and water, clearing stalls was the easy part. Riding a horse is a lot of hard work.

Riding actually requires a lot of core work.

And legs. I remember my legs burning after long rides.

I ballroom dance competitively. It's a great workout. I have some dances that leave me out of breath and some are easier. It's really, really enjoyable though. It's a very social activity.

People have an impression that ballroom dancing is like walking and it's for old people. A lot of dances are more similar to zumba than walking.

Swiming and hiking if you like to think while moving. Various yoga or dance (including barre/ballet) classes if you prefer group settings. And if you like team work and are social, grass volleyball (beginner 6s) is a lot of fun and it takes as much effort as you put into it.

Do you ride horses? I don't know which style you ride, but I can assure you that riding dressage is very much a fitness activity as well as jumping, and generally any kind of horseback riding as long as you know what you are doing. I had abs like never before or after while riding, and even after two pregnancies due to horseback riding I was more fit and toned than ever.

Amen! Abs of steel.

Try some Pilates! It's fun (much more so than yoga IMO) and the core work would be great to help with horseback riding.

OP here. I think this interests me the most. How should I get started? Where's the best place to start with lessons?
