This is obviously a very different list than you'd get from most US News rankings. The Military Times is, as the name suggest, a magazine that is widely read among military personnel. Cybersecurity is a new, and specific enough field, such that the overall school ranking may not be as important.

This is probably ranked for the online classes for military who get deployed or cannot do a traditional school like my husband. Some of this schools make no sense.

It does seem geared toward active duty personnel. Might not be the best list for a kid from an affluent NOVA family.

Any list that has UMUC on it is immediately suspect.

UMUC has a very strong cyber security, programing and IT/business classes online/military. (though many of the classes are not that great as my husband took some and thought they were terrible). They are catering to older folks, working and active duty.

Believe it or not, but the University of Tulsa has carved out a niche in cyber security. If you want to keep options open, shoot for the best CS program you can.

I've interviewed quite a few people with UMUC CS degrees; it's a worthless program. I don't even bother with resumes from there anymore as it's just a waste of my time.

Which schools do you think are good for CS?

This. Cybersecurity is evolving very rapidly right now, and I anticipate there to be a lot more fragmentation in the future. IoT is going to be a game changer in terms of how people think about cybersecurity in critical infrastructure...actually, it already is, but most people are not thinking about it right now (but I digress).

I work in cybersecurity for IoT applications (it's not my only focus, but falls under my responsibilities), and right now I pretty much don't care about where people went to school so much as what they've done and whether they can intelligently articulate some of the unique concerns. The hands-down best person I know in this area who is not very senior went to UC-Irvine and got a physics degree. But he's basically a genius who never stops learning and expanding his skills. From today's perspective, the most important hting is for your kid to be able to get a solid programming foundation that he can leverage to a job at a company or agency where he'll be working on cybersecurity (probably starting with an internship as well). If your kid is very smart and looking for something more than just a journeyman type position making sure standards are met, then too narrow a focus on cybersecurity will be detrimental. He'll need exposure to the bigger picture of how IT is being applied in the world...any of the elite tech schools (MIT, Stanford, CalTech) will give him that as will solid programs at other good schools.

Locally UMDCP and UMBC are both very good, although UMDCP is definitely better. I've gotten some good folks from Towson as well. CMU, MIT, Georgia Tech, UIUC, Stanford; I've interviewed and worked with folks from all of these schools and have been very impressed.

The top students at most flagship state schools are generally excellent as well, even if the school isn't known for CS.

Yes for USNA. My daughter did a summer STEM program there and was really impressed with their cyber security training.

Also Purdue and Rensselaer Polytechnic are leaders in the field.

I would send my kid to U of MD College Park given there is plenty of access to internships and the cleared world. My husband went to literally a no name college via the military and he has had no issue getting jobs in the field. No one cares where he went to school. He works hard and interviews well. What college you go to is important in other fields but not so much IT.

Not GMU? I thought they had a strong computer department.
