It looks like my kid's teacher will not let him have a spring break after all

Take a 10 minute break, write task at hand, do another 25 minutes.

For a junior in high school??

If your kid is stressed, age doesn't matter. Maybe having a structured plan for a limited time each day would alleviate the stress.

When were the papers assigned? I've given projects and had them due before break only for some students to beg me to change the date to the day they return so they could have the break to work on it. Sometimes I do this but tell everyone I would like them submitted before they leave so they don't have homework over a vacation. That way everyone is happy. Some students do not have vacation plans and are less stressed if they can work on papers and projects during a week off. Others want a week completely off. I did not want to assign anyone homework over the break. I understand that many students are traveling and taking a well deserved vacation. They work hard and need a complete break.

I've heard that before. I teach for FCPS and if that's a rule not all teachers adhere to it.

Our FCPS HS adheres to it. It seems comes out in an email from the Principal before every break.

Is this a county-wide policy or decided school by school?

He knows now that he has to read a few hundred pages and write two papers that will be due after spring break.

No reason not to get going on that now is there?

Sounds pretty standard for junior year.

And will you be bunking with him in college, or just taking an apartment in his college town?

I know that Yorktown has a no homework over break policy.

That sucks op.
It's 40 pp a day. Is it novels or textbook? Hopefully literature instead of some history textbook! If so, it will be easy. Ask him to consider spending 1 hour each morning hitting that 40 a day goal.
The paper due after school comes back can be done on the last day or two.
The paper due on the second day can just be done on Monday.

I like the plan above, but see if he can set aside his anger and come up with a realistic plan. This is the kind of stuff college throws at you too. And in college, there's no time to be bitter. You just have to plan and move on it.

Hopefully there is no math and physics!! But similarly, he just needs to be ok with spending an hour or two on this stuff right after breakfast.

I like the poster who talked about 25 minutes on, and a 10 minute break. I do pomodoros (look it up), which is similar. 25-5-25-5-25-30, then repeat if necessary. Means he could get 3 chunks of work done in 1.5 hours.

Anonymous wrote:My junior kid has been working very hard this school year and have mostly A's. So far, two of his classes load him with busy work and projects - he has to read two hundred pages for one class, 160 for another, a paper due the day they return from spring break and one after. Plus he needs to study for AP subject test. He doesn't know yet if he'll get work from math and physics. He is pissed and extremely stressed by this last minute surprise. Now he is not looking forward to spring break after all. Anyone else's stressed out for their kid?

Poor baby. Maybe ne needs a hug.

Yorktown has a policy against homework over breaks. So, this sounds odd.

School by school. Our principal sends out an email, but it is not a rule for the county.
