While searching on Expedia, I actually found a package for airfare + hotel (it looks nice and gets excellent reviews on tripadvisor) for just under $2000 for both of us. Do you think 6 days of food (breakfast is included at the hotel) and entrance fees at sites could be had for approx. $1000? If we go over a bit it's ok---but do you think we could be somewhat in that range?

Sorry, OP again...I should have said that was for Florence, Italy.

Check into train tickets and hotels in Cinque Terra. You said you like hiking - that area is known for hiking. I imagine the food is less expensive than Florence as well.

But yes, I think you could definitely eat and get into museums for approx. $1000.

And I will look at Cinque Terra as well!

OP back again--just wanted to say thank you again for recommending Cinque Terre! I've been researching like crazy for the past day or so and I am SO excited about walking the trails!

Cinque Terra is amazing and super easy to get to from Florence. The hikes and views are some of the best - although you do need to be careful on some of the steeper cliffs!

You can easily spend a few days there but I think 6 might be a lot. Maybe a few days in Florence and a couple there. When I went we just did it as a day trip but I wished we would have at least spent one night. There are so many beautiful small towns that are easily accessible by train from Florence (Lucca, Siena, Fiesole is just outside the city and gorgeous!).
