Tech help with 6th grader and homework

Anonymous
I have sixth grade twins and have a few ideas:
1. I second a PP about Chromebooks. We bought ours for $150 each (Acer brand) and you can limit the websites they use, track everything when kid is a supervised user (you have to be careful to set it up this way from the beginning, however), etc.
2. Have you considered having your child do his homework in the morning with your supervision? This could revolutionize your life, possibly.
3. Is there a way your child could work with his teachers to get work to do over the weekend?

Basically, I think the advice to deal with reality is sound. Your child probably needs a break and may not be able to self-regulate enough to do homework/resist digital temptations without you there. Good luck!

He still gets distracted at times (it is what it is!) but his work gets done and his grades are good.

OP again. I just checked out their website and it looks promising. Maybe I will look into it further.

OP here. I am not happy that he is wasting so much time when we don't have much during the week to waste. I understand he needs a break but unless I am standing over him, he isn't just going to stop playing games after 30 mins is over. He has ADHD and has trouble with self regulation. If he just waited until I got home, his meds would be mostly worn off and then everything takes twice the time. He uses both Google classroom and IXL for math. He used to go to his elementary school's afterschool program so he mostly go the HW done there and it was on paper so no electronic distractions. He can't do it in the morning because I leave for work at 6:45 and he leaves at 7:15. He takes his meds right when I leave around 6:45 and they last for appr. 12 hours. I have thought about getting rid of his sport but it would't help much. His meds have worn off by practice time so he is almost bouncing off the walls by 7pm. The exercise is just about the only thing that helps him fall asleep at night.

For my HS kid with ADHD, there is no way she could get her HW done without taking a short acting booster in the afternoons. She gets home around 4:30, takes her booster, and then lounges for 30-40 minutes until the meds kick in. Then she does homework.

PP- What booster does she take? Maybe it's time to discuss it with the doctor.

In the morning she takes 40 mg of Metadate CD, which is a long acting form of Ritalin. In the afternoon, she takes a 10 mg short acting tablet of Ritalin (generic). I have them set out in a pill case for her. She only takes it on school days. She doesn't need it on the weekends.

In elementary school, she didn't need the booster. But she did starting in MS.
