Sorry Eaton too...
LOTS of good choices out there, but there have been LOTS of structural changes in the past two years, so keep gathering info beyond the overall 'buzz'. |
They got a temporary extension, so they will have grade 6 through this year, I believe. Then they go to pk-5. There was a big discussion about this on DCUM in the last six months or so, and someone got verification that the extension was temporary from DCPS or the Mann principal. |
Another vote for Eaton. Friendly families, diverse students, no Mann-type social issues, excellent teachers and principal. |
12:07 While Oyster is pre-K through 8, the upper grades are not dual immersion the way the lower school is. This does not seem to be widely known outside of the Oyster community. As I understand it from current parents, Grades 7 and 8 are mainly English with Spanish language and maybe one other Spanish course or some Spanish within a course. I think the dual immersion model goes through Grade 5. That's how it was a year ago. Also, the upper school is still figuring out curriculum, etc., I am not sure it's on the same level as the lower school but it's new so it might be moving in that direction. Current parents can elaborate. We left a year ago. |
Interestingly, Eaton is slated to become a "specialized" school focusing on Chinese language and culture. See today's Post here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/28/AR2009072801721.html?wprss=rss_metro/dc I find it somewhat odd that Eaton was chosen for this. |
Indeed. Thomson seems like a much better choice, but that's DCPS for you. |
As a Thomson parent, I want to say how happy I am for Eaton. It's great that they are getting that kind of budgetary support. I heard that their parents raised enough money to keep their wonderful Han Ban teacher for a second year. I'm glad they won't have to rely on their PTA to fund their language program.
I can't help but be crushed though that Thomson isn't getting budgetary support for Chinese or for IB. Thomson is a school that is drawing parents from all over the city because of it's compelling offerings in terms of language, music and IB. I'm just worried how we're going to pay for the programs we've worked so hard to create. Regardless, congratulations to Eaton. Chinese is a high-demand program and I saw their students perform at the Asian Heritage Celebration at Bell. They were terrific. |
also, I think the Eaton district has a high percentage of families who choose to send their kids to private school. DCPS may be trying to draw them back in by offering this new program. Personally, i think it could backfire unless it is an A+ program. |
Hello,
Why is Langdon Education Campus never mentioned. It is a Blue Ribbon School with high test scores. I always see the schools West of the Park mentioned. Are the others not worthy of mention? |
The upper school is not on the same level, and does not look like it is going to be any time soon unfortunately. --Former Oyster teacher |
They are worthy of mention. I live West of the Park, and so I talk about schools I have direct experience of--so I don't send anyone down a wild goose path. You just mentioned it; please elaborate--you could add a lot to people's understanding of choices in the city. ![]() |
12:47 (I bet we know each other.) I'm surprised that the Oyster website still includes the following.
All instruction and school activities are conducted in a dual-language immersion environment, with equal weight given to learning in English and in Spanish. It is just not true. That ends in Grade 6! |
I'm sure we do; better not say too much or I'll get in trouble ![]() |
I don't have details on what sort of curriculum development is occurring at Oyster-Adams Middle School. I'm pretty disconnected, nearly all my child's friends went to Deal or to private school after many years at Oyster. Which is too bad, had more invested student/families stayed I am certain the middle school would have taken off. |
I have heard that Janney is a mess right now, but have a deep wealth of community support. Look into them. |
