It's been in DHS for 14 years. Get with the program.

Still not DoD.

I've a friend who was career Air Force. He saw over 90 countries in his 20 years and wouldn't trade the overall experience for anything.

Air Force or Navy - choose a job that is transferable if possible.

I always though the navy uniforms looked pretty gay especially with the last name on their butt. Maybe they've updated them since I was in the Army.

I didn't like the Army dress greens either but dress blues were cool.

Ha! My DH is an Air Force veteran, and I thought the same thing.

I have two relatives who were military pilots a generation ago (one Navy, one Air Force). Both went on to fly for commercial airlines and make gobs of money while loving their jobs. Seriously, even without adjusting for inflation, one made more per year in 1985 than a capped out GS-15 does in 2017.

See if he can do that.

Another one for Air Force. I was a military brat overseas and the Air Force had it better. With the Navy, you get stuck on a ship for 6 months. Army & Marines get deployed a lot & I would consider the more "tougher" of the services. They however have a lot more pride.

USMC has the strongest "bond of brothers." AF gets little respect. I'd take Navy over Army, but you have to be the kind of person who can spend months where a tiny berth on an aircraft carrier is your only privacy.
Best option. Graduate college. Shop services for best commission.

Navy or Air Force. Train as aviation maintenance in either for great job opps post-military.

I was Air Force, liked it well enough, but should've gone Coast Guard instead.

That may seem counterintuitive and cross-purposes, but only to people to blunt to understand.

I vote Coast Guard.

I vote Air Force. My father was an Air Force officer and pilot. Loved every minute of it. Went into depression when he had to retire.

That being said, he advised against my joining the Air Force if I was not going to be a pilot. It is a "fighter pilot's force,: he said. "Everyone else is second fiddle."

I ended up not joining the military, but have been a Foreign Service Officer for nearly 20 years.

Regardless of what agency the Coast Guard falls under its still part of the United States Armed Forces.

It has different missions and authorities (thus the alignment with DHS) but still operates under the U.S. Military umbrella with all the benefits, entitlements, etc. of all the service members (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines). Left the Coast Guard many years ago and what I enjoyed was I was always doing missions that were relevant (search and rescue, law enforcement) as opposed to my dad who served in the Army during the cold war who just spent all his time training for a war that never happened (too young for Vietnam, too Old for Desert Storm).

I have a son in the Army. My dad was in the Air Force.

I would advise that it is not so much the branch of service, but what he does in that branch. Each branch has its specialties. The requirements and the travel of those in the specialties varies quite a bit.

So, it depends upon his interest (and ultimately his ability) to do specific jobs within each branch.

Hello, OP here. Thank-you to everyone for your advice and opinions.

At this time, nephew apparently has his heart set on the Marine Reserves. He has a part time job and works with a couple guys who are retired military, Marines. I think they have been giving him advice.

Saw someone posted the first link below on Facebook and remembered this thread:

It's basically joking about how recruiters in each branch is. Some of it is funny because there's some truth behind it. Except for maybe the Navy which they keep making fun of.
